Match Report
Sabres Undone by Letchford's Five-Wicket Masterclass at Brownsfield
Sonning U13 Sabres suffered a defeat away to Thatcham Town in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) West fixture at Brownsfield on 20th July, bowled out for 66 before the hosts chased down the target with eight wickets down in 15.3 overs.
Captain Finley Andrews won the toss and elected to bat, and the Sabres made a brisk start. Andrews himself struck two fours in a quick-fire 9 off 7 balls before being bowled by Harrison Plank, bringing Tavish Malik to the crease at 13 for 1. Utkarsh Sinha showed patience at the other end, occupying 14 deliveries for his 4, while Malik contributed 3 before falling lbw to Eoin Letchford, leaving Sonning at 22 for 2.
What followed was a devastating spell of bowling from Letchford that ripped through the Sabres middle order. The Thatcham seamer claimed five wickets for just 2 runs from his two overs, including a maiden, dismissing Malik, Izaan Baloch, Abhinav Surisetty, Daniel Moseley, and Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe in quick succession. At one stage, the Sabres slumped from 24 for 3 to 32 for 7 as four wickets fell without a run being added.
Dhruv Reddy Kantigari provided the most resistance of any Sonning batter, top-scoring with 10 off 22 balls, including two boundaries. He shared a useful lower-order partnership with Aarib Ansari that took the score from 32 to 51, before Ansari was bowled by Gunnar Wren for 2. Sebastian Cook added a late cameo of 7 off 5 balls, striking one four, but was bowled by Nilesh Sharma as Sonning were dismissed for 66 in 13 overs, with extras contributing 28 to the total.
In reply, the Sabres struck early and often with the ball. Moseley was superb with the new ball, returning outstanding figures of 2 for 1 from two overs with a maiden, dismissing Olly Lancaster for a duck and trapping Aiden Mohammed lbw. Jayawardana Weerasinghe also chipped in with the wicket of captain Harry Taylor, bowled for 1, and Thatcham were reeling at 1 for 2 and then 9 for 3.
Harrison Plank steadied the Thatcham innings, anchoring the recovery with a composed 15 off 25 balls before retiring not out. He shared a partnership of 24 for the fourth wicket with Samuel Ghulam, who contributed 11 off 20 balls. Cook then produced a superb spell with the ball, claiming 3 for 7 from his two overs, bowling Ghulam and Wren before having Letchford trapped lbw, reducing the hosts to 33 for 6 and giving Sonning genuine hope of pulling off a remarkable victory.
However, Lucas Sayer proved the match-winner for Thatcham, striking an unbeaten 16 off 19 balls with three fours. He put on 32 for the seventh wicket with William Ivie, a partnership that effectively settled the contest. The Sabres managed two run outs late on to keep the pressure up, but Sayer guided Thatcham home, reaching the target of 67 in the 16th over. Despite the defeat, there were positives for Sonning to take from the game, particularly Moseley's superb opening spell and Cook's three-wicket burst that so nearly turned the match on its head.
