Match Report

Falcons Outgunned by Dominant Boyne Hill in North East League Clash

Sonning U9 Falcons endured a difficult afternoon away to Boyne Hill Under 9 Stags on 21 May, falling to a comprehensive defeat in the U9 Super 8s North East league. After being inserted following Boyne Hill's decision to field first, the Falcons could muster only 76 from their 20 overs before the hosts raced to 166 in reply, sealing a convincing victory.

Batting first, the Falcons found run-scoring extremely difficult against a disciplined Boyne Hill attack. Aum Narwal was virtually unplayable, returning remarkable figures of 3-7-4-7 — seven wickets from his three overs while conceding just four runs, including a maiden. Captain Jayen Nangpal was equally destructive with the ball, claiming six wickets from his three overs for 11 runs. The pair combined to take 13 of the 23 wickets that fell, leaving the Falcons' batting order in disarray throughout.

Heet Panchal offered the brightest resistance for the Falcons, top-scoring with 10 from 12 balls including a boundary. Lewis Towner and Oscar Williams each contributed seven runs apiece, showing some fight in the middle of the innings. Anay Goswani remained unbeaten on five, striking a four during a tidy nine-ball stay, while captain Anay Patel added five from 13 deliveries. However, with 23 wickets falling across the innings — each carrying a five-run penalty under the pairs format — the Falcons' total was always likely to be insufficient.

The hosts' reply was emphatic. Narwal, having already dismantled the Falcons' batting, proved just as devastating with the bat, smashing 39 from only 17 balls with seven fours and a six. His explosive innings set the tone from the outset and ensured Boyne Hill were never under any pressure in the chase. Joshan Kandohla provided excellent support with 23 from 17 balls, finding the boundary four times.

Contributions came right through the Boyne Hill order. Opener Liam Carroll anchored the early overs with a composed 12, while Harrison Bradley (9), captain Nangpal (9) and Logan Richards (8) all chipped in. Crucially, only two wickets fell across the entire Boyne Hill innings, meaning minimal penalty runs were deducted from their total.

The Falcons' bowling lacked the control needed to contain the opposition. Extras proved costly, with 57 runs conceded in wides and no-balls alone — 41 from wides and 16 from no-balls. William Gates's two overs included 14 wides, while Harry Mills conceded seven wides and six no-balls from his spell. Oscar Williams was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding just seven from his two overs, though he was unable to claim a wicket. Anay Goswani was the sole Falcon to take a wicket, finishing with 1-16 from two overs, while Arjun Chirunamala bowled tidily in his single over, going for just four runs.

It was a tough day at the office for the young Falcons, who will recognise that greater discipline with the ball and finding ways to build longer batting partnerships remain areas for development as the league campaign continues.
