Match Report

Akula's Commanding 75 Anchors Sonning to Comfortable Victory at Goosecroft

Sonning Sunday 1s travelled to Goosecroft on 2nd August and produced a thoroughly dominant all-round display to defeat Purley on Thames in this friendly fixture. Captain Richard Skeil won the toss and elected to bat, a decision fully vindicated as Sonning posted 220 for 9 from their 35 overs before bowling the hosts out for 146 to secure a convincing 74-run victory.

The cornerstone of Sonning's innings was an excellent 75 from Kishan Akula, who batted with great composure through the middle overs. Arriving at the crease with the score at 32 for 2 after openers Alex Mcloughlin and Karthikeya Reddy had both departed and Robert Jones had fallen for a brisk 16 off just 9 balls, Akula set about rebuilding methodically. He struck 14 fours in his 84-ball knock, displaying fine shot selection and consistent boundary-hitting throughout his stay.

Akula was well supported by a succession of partners who kept the scoreboard ticking. A stand of 56 for the third wicket with Mcloughlin, who made an enterprising 26 off 28 balls including four fours and a six, established the platform. Elliot Gray contributed 15 and Skeil a fluent 21 off 17 deliveries, but it was the sixth-wicket partnership of 59 between Akula and Idris Malik that truly propelled the total. Malik's patient 15 from 27 balls allowed Akula to dominate the strike and push the score to 193 before the main man was caught off Alex Rawlinson's bowling.

A brief wobble saw Sonning slip from 193 for 6 to 204 for 9 as Ben Hardy picked up two quick wickets for just 8 runs from his three overs. However, Timothy Jenner and Isaac Jenner ensured there was no further collapse, adding an unbroken 16 for the last wicket to push the total to a highly competitive 220. Among Purley's bowlers, Hardy's figures of 2 for 8 were the most economical, while Raj Senniappan and Rawlinson each claimed two wickets apiece, though at considerable cost.

Purley's reply started disastrously as the hosts crumbled to 4 for 3. Isaac Jenner struck twice in the early overs, removing Ben Hardy and Iolo Salvage, while Robert Jones had William Beauchamp caught — off his own bowling — with the score still on nought. Sonning's opening bowlers were outstanding, and the hosts found themselves staring at an impossible task.

Captain Sam Harlowe almost single-handedly dragged Purley back into contention with a superb 45 off 47 balls, lacing eight fours in an innings of real quality. He put on 63 for the fifth wicket with Ollie Allum, who made 13, to haul the score from 16 for 4 to 79. It was a partnership that gave the home side genuine hope, but Harlowe's dismissal — caught off Jones — proved the decisive moment.

Jeff Hinds battled hard lower down the order, compiling a gritty 31 from 54 balls with five fours, and shared a 49-run stand for the seventh wicket with Razi Khan. But with wickets continuing to fall at the other end, the required rate climbed beyond reach. Partha Pal chipped in with the important wicket of Jake Hall, stumped by Mcloughlin, while Karthikeya Reddy produced a devastating final over, claiming 2 for 1 to wrap up the innings. Sonning used nine bowlers in all, with Jenner's 3 for 40 the standout figures, ably supported by Jones's 2 for 33 and Akula's tidy spell of 1 for 9 from four overs.
