Scorchers Fall Short as Goring's Explosive Batting Proves Decisive
The U11 Scorchers travelled to Gardiner Recreation Ground on 25 May for their U11 League Pool 3 fixture against Goring, who won the toss and inserted the visitors to bat first. Despite posting a respectable total of 96 for 4 from their 20 overs, the Scorchers were unable to defend it as Goring's top order raced to the target in just 8.3 overs, losing only a single wicket in the process.
The Scorchers' innings got off to a difficult start as Shaurya Gore was bowled by James Harrow for a duck with the score on just 1. Captain Aryaansh Rawat showed some early intent, making 5 before being caught by Freddie Blackwell off the bowling of Francis Ambridge, leaving Sonning at 19 for 2 and in need of a rebuilding effort.
Oscar Williams provided precisely that, playing the standout innings for the Scorchers. He struck three boundaries in a fluent knock of 25 from 22 balls before retiring not out. Williams was at the heart of a crucial 52-run partnership that steadied the ship and gave the innings much-needed momentum through the middle overs. Zain Baloch contributed 8 from 25 balls and Leo Ribbens added 4 from 25 deliveries, both retiring not out to ensure others had an opportunity to bat.
Jonathan Turner offered a late cameo of 6, including a boundary, before being run out by Fenwick Partridge-Brown with the score on 71. Anay Patel struck a quick-fire 4 from 4 balls, also hitting a four, but was run out shortly after as the Scorchers finished on 96 for 4. A significant 42 extras, including 14 byes, 14 no-balls and 9 wides, bolstered the total considerably.
The Scorchers' bowling attack found conditions far less forgiving in the second innings. Goring's reply was devastating from the outset, with their top three batters dismantling the bowling with ruthless efficiency. Fenwick Partridge-Brown was the chief destroyer, smashing 28 from just 15 balls with six boundaries before retiring not out. Captain Freddie Blackwell was equally destructive, hammering 23 not out from 18 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes.
Arthur Teed provided the sole bright spot with the ball for Sonning, clean bowling Finn Roy to reduce Goring briefly to 10 for 1, though his over did prove costly at 14 runs including five wides. Oscar Williams bowled with admirable control, conceding just 3 runs from his over, while Aryaansh Rawat was also economical with figures of 1-0-5-0. However, these efforts were not enough to stem the flow of runs elsewhere.
Arthur Good sealed the victory for the hosts with an unbeaten 19 from 13 balls, striking three fours as Goring reached 97 for 1 with more than seven overs to spare. The comprehensive nature of the chase, completed in under half the allotted overs, underlined the gulf between the two sides on the day. For the Scorchers, Williams' batting performance and the tidy spells from Rawat and Williams with the ball offered encouragement, but the side will need to find greater consistency across all departments in their upcoming fixtures.
