Stingers Cruise to Comfortable Victory Over Wargrave in Softball League Clash

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball secured a convincing win over Wargrave in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance Group 2 on 11th June, chasing down their opponents' modest total of 48 with a commanding score of 90 for just one wicket.

Wargrave won the toss and elected to bat first, but their batters struggled to build any real momentum against a disciplined Sonning bowling attack. Chloe Bailey set the tone early with an outstanding spell of 2-1 from her two overs, including a maiden, conceding just a single run. Katie Barrows was equally parsimonious, returning figures of 2-0-2-0 as the Stingers kept the Wargrave scoring in check throughout the opening overs.

Sarah Bennett and Morag Broom offered the most resistance for Wargrave, each scoring 7 runs. Bennett struck a boundary during her 6-ball knock, while Broom found the rope once in her 12-ball stay at the crease. However, Broom was dismissed three times during her innings, severely limiting Wargrave's ability to post a competitive total. Captain Amanda Bayley managed just 4 runs from 10 balls, and the lower order could not accelerate, with Rosie Keevil mustering only 1 from 12 deliveries.

Elinor Longridge proved the most penetrative bowler for Sonning, claiming two wickets from her two overs for 10 runs, while Sandhya Sharma was equally effective in her single over, taking 2-5 despite conceding four wides. Wargrave's first innings total of 48, which included 24 extras — 18 of them wides — was always going to be a difficult score to defend.

The Stingers' reply was emphatic. Longridge led from the front with the bat, striking 10 runs from just 8 balls, including two fours, before being the only Sonning batter dismissed. Katie Barrows contributed a fluent 6 from 10 balls with a boundary, while captain Sharon Fleming steadied affairs with 4 off 12 deliveries.

The standout performance with the bat came from Chloe Bailey, who completed an excellent all-round display with a top score of 21 from 16 balls, dispatching three fours in an innings that put the result beyond all doubt. Rebecca Mahli added a useful 5 off 13 balls, including a four, as Sonning's batting line-up proved far too strong.

Wargrave's bowlers were unable to stem the flow of runs, with extras proving particularly costly.
