Mcloughlin's Masterful 74 Anchors Sonning 2nd XI Victory Over Braywood

Sonning 2nd XI secured a hard-fought 24-run victory over Braywood at King George's Field in Division 5B, with opener Alex Mcloughlin's commanding 74 providing the foundation for a successful defence of 211 for seven.

Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and chose to bat on a surface that offered enough for both bat and ball throughout the afternoon. Mcloughlin and Sid Anilkumar put on 26 for the opening stand before Anilkumar fell for 2, caught by wicketkeeper Saksham Singh off Uzairuddin Mohammed. Anderson joined Mcloughlin and the pair added a crucial 50 for the second wicket, with the skipper contributing 24 from 47 balls before being caught off Mangal Velji.

The most productive partnership of the Sonning innings came between Mcloughlin and Indeveer Sahota, who put on 60 for the third wicket. Sahota played fluently for his 37 off 48 deliveries, striking six fours, before being run out by Syed Amer Quadri with the score on 136. Mcloughlin's dismissal in the same passage of play — lbw to Quadri for a superbly constructed 74 off 92 balls, laced with nine boundaries — triggered a brief wobble as Robert Jones departed for a duck in the same over, leaving Sonning 136 for four.

Syed Amer Quadri was the pick of the Braywood attack, returning excellent figures of 3 for 30 from his seven overs. Henry Cook's cameo of 20 off just 16 balls, including a six, and Shenul Widanapathirana's unbeaten 26 off 26 ensured Sonning pushed on to a competitive total, the lower order adding 75 runs from the final 15 overs to post 211 for seven from their 45.

Braywood's reply began disastrously when Daud Haider was caught by Hatib Khan off John Rimmer for just 1, with only a single run on the board. Rimmer struck again to remove Uzairuddin Mohammed for 11, caught by Henry Cook, but Mangal Velji and Saksham Singh counter-attacked brilliantly. Their third-wicket partnership of 64 took Braywood to 96 before Widanapathirana bowled Singh for 33. Velji continued to play aggressively, reaching a fine half-century off 52 balls with eight fours and a six, before Adil Malik had him caught behind by Mcloughlin for 52 with the score on 100.

From 100 for four, Braywood slumped to 112 for seven as Sonning's bowling attack tightened the screws. Malik accounted for Quadri, caught by Robert Jones for 3, while Khan removed both Naseer Ahmed and Omkar Jadhav in quick succession. At 112 for seven, the match appeared all but over, yet Amit Gokhru and Tapan Kumar mounted a stubborn eighth-wicket stand of 60 that threatened to pull off the unlikely. Kumar battled to 27 off 52 balls before Ghulam Abbas finally broke through, with Mcloughlin taking the catch to end the partnership at 172.

Gokhru remained defiant with an unbeaten 36 from 67 deliveries, but he ran out of partners. Widanapathirana had Chetan Bhanot caught by Abbas for 11, and then completed the victory when he ran out captain Ajay Carvalo to dismiss Braywood for 187 in 43.3 overs. The wickets were shared admirably across the Sonning attack, with Rimmer, Widanapathirana, Malik, and Khan each claiming two scalps in a thoroughly professional bowling display that earned the home side a maximum 22 league points.
