Sonning Women Fall Short as Slough's Middle Order Proves Decisive

Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered defeat on the road against Slough in the Super 8 Development Group 1, falling 36 runs short of their target after being set 116 to win in this pairs format encounter on 19th May.

Captain Katie Barrows won the toss and opted to insert Slough, but the decision yielded mixed returns. The home side's top order made a steady start through Jamila Ghori, who struck 12 from 20 balls at the top of the innings, before Sonning's bowlers made early inroads. Chloe Bailey was the pick of the attack, claiming 2 for 14 from her three overs to remove two Slough batters and keep the scoring in check during the opening exchanges.

It was the middle order that transformed Slough's innings. Ruhi Kashyap played with real authority, smashing six fours in a fluent 27 from just 18 deliveries, while Raabia Akhter was even more destructive, hammering 30 from only 15 balls, also finding the boundary rope on six occasions. Their combined assault propelled Slough to 115 for 5 from their 16 overs. Rita Green chipped in with a useful 1 for 19 from three overs, and Emily Waterfield took 1 for 21, though 23 extras — including 16 wides — proved costly for the visiting bowlers. Michaela Herrett's three economical overs of 0 for 12 offered some control amid the onslaught.

The chase began poorly for Sonning, with openers Elinor Longridge and Michaela Herrett managing just one run apiece as they struggled against the new ball. Longridge faced 12 deliveries for her single, while Herrett occupied 11 balls for the same return, and the required rate climbed steeply.

Siobhan Davis offered some resistance in the middle order with a battling 9 from 11 balls, including one four, while Grace Phillips contributed 6 before falling to Jamila Ghori, who was the only Slough bowler to take wickets, finishing with 2 for 19 from her four overs. Barrows endured a frustrating afternoon, unable to score from her 13 deliveries before also being dismissed by Ghori.

The brightest moment with the bat came from Rita Green, who top-scored for Sonning with 16 from 16 balls, striking three boundaries to inject some urgency into the lower order. Emily Waterfield added 4 from 7 balls, but the damage had been done during those sluggish early overs. Despite accumulating a remarkable 38 extras — with Slough's bowlers sending down 26 wides — Sonning could muster only 79 for 2 from their 16 overs.

The defeat leaves Sonning with just a single league point from the fixture, while Slough collected a full six points. Bailey's performance with the ball and Green's late hitting with the bat were the standout contributions for Sonning on a day when the top-order batting simply could not match the firepower of Slough's middle order.
