Match Report

Sabres Fall Short as Marlow Chase Down 158 at Knowl Hill

Sonning U15 Sabres posted a competitive 158 for 4 from their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat at Knowl Hill, but Marlow's powerful top order proved too strong in the chase, reaching 161 for 3 with five balls to spare to claim victory in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge East fixture.

Captain Neil Jasti promoted himself to open alongside Edward Hanson and gave the Sabres innings early impetus, striking 14 from 14 balls including a four and a six before being caught by Joseph Coombs off the bowling of Marlow skipper Alex Pearce. The first wicket fell at 18, but it was the second-wicket partnership that truly set the platform. Hanson and Ollie Terry combined for a stand of 41, with Terry immediately taking the attack to the Marlow bowlers.

Terry was in outstanding touch, blazing 33 from just 21 deliveries, his innings studded with six fours and a six. The wicketkeeper-batsman retired not out having given the Sabres real momentum through the middle overs. When Shreyas Koppole fell cheaply for 1, caught by George Penlington off Yuvi Sandhu, it brought Edward Jones to the crease. Jones matched Terry's aggression with a superb 32 from 25 balls, clearing the boundary twice and finding the rope four times before he too retired not out.

A significant contribution to the Sabres' total came from extras, with Marlow's bowlers conceding 56 in total — 48 of which were wides. Alex Hutt (3-0-19-0) alone sent down 13 wides, while Jake Smith (3-0-32-0) and Joseph Coombs (3-1-12-0) also struggled with their accuracy. The closing overs saw Parthasarathy Palaniappan manage only 4 from 24 balls before being run out, which slowed the scoring rate when the Sabres might have pushed beyond 170.

Marlow's reply started ominously for the Sabres as Coombs and Sandhu tore into the bowling from the outset. The opening pair put on 64 before Coombs retired not out on 30, an innings featuring four fours and a six from 23 balls. Sandhu was equally destructive, smashing 31 from 21 deliveries with three fours and two sixes before also retiring. Shreyas Koppole provided the Sabres with a breakthrough, bowling Alex Pearce for 1, but Jake Smith then took charge with a composed 31 from 26 balls, lacing six boundaries to keep Marlow well ahead of the rate.

Nishal Jarugu claimed the second wicket, bowling Owen Sellers for a golden duck, and Edward Hanson had Sebastian Clarke caught for 18 to give the Sabres a glimmer of hope at 156 for 3. However, with Sam Bingham (11 not out) and Alex Hutt (5 not out) at the crease, Marlow needed just five more runs and knocked them off in the 20th over. The Sabres' bowling was hampered by extras of their own, conceding 34 — including 31 wides — across nine different bowlers used by the side.

Despite the defeat, the Sabres can take encouragement from the batting performances of Terry and Jones, whose aggressive innings ensured the total was a challenging one. Christopher Dowse was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding 20 from his three overs without a wide, while Hanson's single over at the death yielded a wicket for just two runs.
