Kestrels Cruise to Comfortable Victory with Dominant Batting Display Against West Reading
Sonning U9 Kestrels produced an outstanding all-round performance to defeat West Reading in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South West league on 17th June 2024, chasing down their opponents' total with considerable ease.
Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that proved inspired as the Kestrels' bowlers made early inroads into the West Reading batting order. Aryaansh Rawat delivered a superb spell, returning figures of 4 wickets for just 3 runs from his 2 overs — a remarkable performance that ripped through the heart of the opposition batting. Hatchett-Walker himself matched Rawat's haul with 4 wickets of his own from 2 overs, conceding 12 runs, while Jasper Hawkins chipped in with 2 wickets.
Abdul Raheem Ali Khan offered the strongest resistance for West Reading, top-scoring with 20 runs from 29 balls, including three fours and a six. Aryan Sharma contributed 8 and Parth Singhal added 7 with a six, but wickets fell regularly throughout the innings. West Reading were bowled out for 114 from their 16 overs, losing 14 wickets in total, with a significant 76 runs coming from extras.
The Kestrels' reply was emphatic. Every single batsman made a positive contribution as the visitors raced to 185, surpassing the target with authority. Hatchett-Walker led from the front with the bat just as he had with the ball, striking a team-high 28 runs from just 15 deliveries, dispatching six boundaries in an innings full of crisp timing and confident strokeplay.
Oscar Williams provided excellent support with 23 runs from 13 balls, hitting three fours and a six, while Aryaansh Rawat completed a magnificent double with 22 runs off 12 balls to complement his devastating bowling spell. Jovan Purwaha weighed in with a fluent 20 from 15 balls, including three fours and a six, ensuring the middle order maintained the scoring momentum.
Alexander Green was unbeaten on 16 from 11 balls at the top of the order, striking two fours and a six, while Freddie Jansen's quickfire 14 from 9 deliveries, featuring two fours and a six, provided a powerful finish. Arthur Teed and Jasper Hawkins both contributed 8 runs apiece, underlining the depth of batting talent throughout the Kestrels' lineup.
West Reading's bowlers toiled hard but found little respite. Dhruv Sharma claimed 4 wickets, albeit at a cost of 46 runs from 3 overs, while Abdul Raheem Ali Khan took 2 for 41 from his 4 overs. The Kestrels' winning margin of 71 runs reflected a thoroughly dominant performance in which every member of the squad played their part in a convincing league victory.
