U11 Sharks Claim Victory at Knowl Hill with Disciplined Bowling Display
Sonning U11 Sharks secured a well-earned win against Reading Tigers in their BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North West fixture at Knowl Hill CC on Wednesday evening, defending stoutly after restricting the visitors to 88 for 8 from their 20 overs.
Reading captain Saee Chatap won the toss and chose to bat first, but the Tigers found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Sonning attack that shared the wickets around impressively. Kiyaan Gupta top-scored for the visitors with 11 off 11 balls, including a boundary, while Hashim Qadeer contributed a brisk 8 from 7 deliveries with a four of his own. Virat Birajdar added 8 from 8 balls, but no Reading batter was able to build a substantial innings against persistent Sonning bowling.
Captain Leo Ribbens led from the front with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 2 for 8 from his three overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball. Harry Waite matched him with 2 for 7 from two overs, providing crucial breakthroughs in the middle order. Seve Horton was equally impressive, claiming 1 for 9 from three overs to open the bowling, while Heet Panchal chipped in with 1 for 8 from his two-over spell. Niko Jordinson picked up a wicket but proved expensive, conceding 16 runs from two overs including six no-balls.
The Sharks' reply in their pairs innings was built on contributions throughout the order, with Seve Horton leading the way with the bat after his earlier bowling heroics. Horton top-scored with 10 off 15 balls, striking two fours to anchor the middle of the innings. Ribbens continued his fine all-round display, making 8 from 13 deliveries with a boundary, while Ethan Cawsey contributed a steady 7 off 14 balls.
Oscar Tann provided some late impetus with a quickfire 6 off just 5 balls, and Lewis Towner matched that score from 7 deliveries, finding the boundary once. Harry Waite, after his excellent bowling spell, showed patience at the crease with 5 from 13 balls. Sonning posted 80 for 4 from their 20 overs, with 28 extras also boosting the total.
Reading's bowlers worked hard to contain Sonning, with Kiyaan Gupta the pick of the attack, returning tidy figures of 1 for 3 from two overs. Captain Chatap bowled with control, conceding just 7 runs from two overs and claiming a maiden — a notable achievement at this age group. Reyansh Katuri was similarly economical with 4 runs from two overs, while Hashim Qadeer conceded only 3 from his spell. Manaswa Telavane claimed the other wicket, finishing with 1 for 5.
Under the pairs format with its starting total and dismissal penalties, Sonning's ability to take eight wickets while losing only four proved decisive. The Sharks' bowling attack, spearheaded by Ribbens and Waite, created enough pressure to ensure the visitors could never build momentum, and the batters did enough to see the job through comfortably. A complete team performance from the Sharks earns them 20 valuable league points.
