Match Report

Mcloughlin and Zahid Star as Sonning Chase Down 202 with Seven Wickets in Hand

Sonning 1st XI produced a commanding run chase at King George's Field on Saturday, overhauling Stoke Green's total of 201 for eight with seven wickets to spare in their Division 1B encounter. Alex Mcloughlin struck a superb 83 and Mohammed Zahid contributed a classy half-century as the home side reached 204 for three in just 36.3 overs.

Stoke Green, having won the toss and elected to bat, endured a sluggish start as Damario Goodman delivered an outstanding spell of seam bowling. His figures of 1-23 from 15 overs, including seven maidens, strangled the visitors' scoring in the early exchanges. Danyal Ghazi struck the first blow, having Amir Asghar caught by Zahid for five, and when Kabir Krishna fell for 11 off 58 balls — caught by Mcloughlin off Zahid's bowling — Stoke Green were 50 for two and struggling to build momentum.

Hamid Riaz provided some early impetus with 24 from 42 balls before retiring not out, while Zaheer Sher added 18 in a partnership of 35 for the third wicket with Riaz. Shenul Widanapathirana bowled Vishal Arjan for 17 to leave the visitors 85 for three, and when Goodman trapped Sher lbw at 93 for four, Stoke Green were in danger of posting an insufficient total.

Danyaal Ishaq changed the complexion of the innings with a fluent 56 from 57 deliveries, striking five fours and two sixes. He shared a crucial partnership of 54 for the sixth wicket with captain Chirag Desai, who contributed a steady 31 from 41 balls. Muhammad Farhan Latif chipped in with a brisk 19 off 19 balls as the middle order hauled Stoke Green past the 200 mark. Zahid was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, finishing with three for 53 from his 11 overs, including the key wickets of Krishna, Ishaq — stumped by Dhruv Peshkar — and Desai, caught by skipper Peter Higginbottom.

Sonning's reply began with a minor setback when Higginbottom edged behind to wicketkeeper Asghar off Latif for four, leaving the score at 16 for one. What followed, however, was a masterclass of controlled aggression from Mcloughlin and Zahid, who combined for a match-defining stand of 121 for the second wicket that took the game firmly away from the visitors.

Mcloughlin was particularly punishing, lacing 14 fours and a six in his 83 from 103 balls, timing the ball beautifully through the gaps and putting away anything loose with authority. Zahid matched his partner's composure, accumulating his runs steadily before accelerating with nine boundaries in his knock of 53 from 67 balls. Their partnership effectively settled the contest, and by the time Zahid fell caught by Krishna off his own bowling at 137 for two, Sonning needed just 65 more with eight wickets remaining.

Mcloughlin continued to push the scoring along before departing for 83 at 165 for three, but Muhammad Ayub ensured there would be no late drama. The experienced batsman smashed an unbeaten 24 from just 23 balls, including four fours and a six, while Sid Anilkumar played a composed hand of 12 not out. The pair added an unbroken 39 for the fourth wicket to complete a comprehensive seven-wicket victory, with Sonning collecting a maximum 26 league points to strengthen their position in the Division 1B standings.
