Match Report

Stingers Dominate Slough with Comprehensive 93-Run Victory

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball delivered a commanding performance in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance – East league on 12th June 2022, posting an imposing 125 for 2 from their 12 overs before bowling Slough out for just 32, securing a resounding victory by 93 runs.

After Slough won the toss and inserted the Stingers, opener Siobhan Davis set the tone with a blistering 26 from just nine balls, striking three fours and two sixes to put the opposition bowlers under immediate pressure. Her aggressive intent at the top of the order ensured the Stingers got off to a flying start that Slough never managed to contain.

Chloe Bailey continued the onslaught at number two, contributing a fluent 20 off nine deliveries, lacing four boundaries in an innings that maintained the early momentum. Lower down the order, Melissa Pengraeve produced perhaps the most eye-catching knock of the innings, smashing an unbeaten 21 from nine balls with five fours, giving the total a significant late boost. Captain Sharon Fleming chipped in with a handy 9, finding the boundary three times during her brief stay.

The Slough bowlers struggled throughout, conceding 26 extras including 12 wides and 14 no-balls. Anna Alborough was the only bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with 1 for 32 from her two overs, while Anna Smy conceded 23 runs from a single over. The lack of discipline with the ball proved costly as the Stingers' total ballooned beyond what should have been a challenging target.

In reply, Slough's batting collapsed spectacularly. Frances Howson was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 for 6 from her two overs to rip through the top order early. Elinor Longridge was equally impressive, picking up 2 for 7 from two overs to ensure there was no recovery.

Siobhan Davis, having already starred with the bat, turned in a miserly spell of 2-1-2-0, bowling a maiden over and conceding just two runs across her allocation. Her all-round contribution was instrumental in the Stingers' dominance throughout the afternoon.

Only Anna Alborough offered any resistance for Slough, top-scoring with 6 from 13 balls, while captain Darshna Modha managed just 2. Five of the eight batters were dismissed, and remarkably, four of them failed to score a single run. The 32 extras in the Slough bowling attack were matched exactly by the 32 extras conceded by Sonning's bowlers, though the Stingers' discipline in other departments made any comparison redundant given the sheer gulf in batting quality on the day.

The comprehensive victory earned the Stingers three valuable league points and underlined their credentials in the competition, with contributions across the entire squad demonstrating impressive depth in both departments.
