Scorchers Fall Short Despite Lott and Anilkumar's Spirited Opening Stand

Sonning U15 Scorchers suffered a 16-run defeat to Wokingham at Wokingham Cricket Club on Monday evening in their BYCL Under 15 T20 Blast West fixture, unable to chase down a target of 144 despite a commanding opening partnership from captain Harrison Lott and Sid Anilkumar.

Wokingham won the toss and chose to bat, but their innings started sluggishly as opener Arin Kulkarni managed just 2 from 14 balls before being run out by wicketkeeper Kavya Panchal with the score on 15. That early breakthrough, however, proved to be a false dawn for the Scorchers. Thomas Ballantine and Owen Barnardo combined for a fluent second-wicket partnership of 63 that shifted the momentum firmly in the home side's favour. Barnardo struck four fours and a six in his brisk 30 off 28 balls before being run out by Aveer Sidhu, while Ballantine anchored the innings with 39 from 41 deliveries.

The Scorchers' bowling attack toiled without great reward. Rayan Chib was the most economical of the eight bowlers used, conceding just 5 runs from his two overs including a maiden, but it was Neil Jasti who claimed the only wicket to fall to a bowler, having Ballantine caught by Lott for 39 with the score on 84. The final seven overs belonged to Wokingham as captain Om Gore (26 not out off 18) and Abdullah Rehman (30 not out off 22) added an unbroken 59 for the fourth wicket, accelerating ruthlessly to propel their side to 143 for 3.

In reply, Lott and Anilkumar gave the Scorchers every reason for optimism. The pair attacked from the outset, putting on 78 for the first wicket — comfortably the highest partnership of the match. Anilkumar was particularly crisp through the off side, striking four boundaries in his 35 off 31 balls before being caught off the bowling of Wokingham skipper Om Gore, with Luke Buchel taking the catch.

Gore proved the decisive figure with the ball, returning excellent figures of 2 for 16 from his three overs. He removed Anilkumar and then bowled Lott for a well-played 41 — an innings that included three fours and a six off 36 balls — to leave the Scorchers reeling at 84 for 3. The quick double strike transformed the complexion of the chase entirely.

From a position of strength, the Scorchers' middle order could not maintain the required tempo. Kavya Panchal fell for 4, caught off Arin Kulkarni, before Aveer Sidhu and Ollie Terry steadied things briefly with a partnership of 20 for the fourth wicket. Sidhu contributed 12 before being caught, and when Terry followed for 6, the Scorchers had slipped to 106 for 5 with the asking rate climbing steeply.

Two run outs in quick succession — Jack Durrant for 5 and Neil Jasti for a golden duck, both with the score on 113 — effectively ended the contest. Ethan Towner (8 not out) and Reyansh Setia (5 not out) batted out the remaining overs but could not conjure the fireworks needed, with the Scorchers closing on 127 for 7, falling 16 runs short of their target.
