Match Report
Akula's Commanding 31 Steers U15 Sabres to Victory Over Kidmore End
Sonning U15 Sabres secured a comfortable win over Kidmore End at Knowl Hill CC on 21 May, chasing down a modest target of 73 with four wickets in hand. Captain Kishan Akula led from the front with a match-winning 31 from 38 balls, anchoring the Sabres' reply after his bowlers had restricted the visitors to just 72 for 8 from their 15.4 overs in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture.
Kidmore End won the toss and chose to bat, but found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Sonning attack that shared the workload across seven bowlers. Opener Sam Robinson struck two early boundaries in a brisk 8 from 8 balls before Namit Desai trapped him lbw, and captain Sumay Minnaar departed without scoring, caught behind by wicketkeeper Ishan Jithendriya off Yuvraj Singh Kaur to leave the visitors 12 for 2.
Ethan De Savoye offered the strongest resistance for Kidmore End, striking three fours in an attractive 18 from 17 deliveries. He and Theo Pawley put on 27 for the third wicket — the most productive stand of the innings — to lift the score to 39. However, Idris Malik broke the partnership when Pawley edged to Shubh Vedalanakar for 7, and in the same over bowled Tom Roach for a golden duck to leave Kidmore End reeling at 39 for 4. Malik's figures of 2 for 9 from three overs, including a maiden, were the pick of the Sonning bowling.
De Savoye fell soon after for 18, caught and bowled by Edward Duvall, and the middle order struggled to accelerate. Tom Hughes (10 off 35 balls) and Freddie Syms (13 off 19) steadied things with a partnership of 23 for the sixth wicket, but Reyansh Setia wrapped up the tail in clinical fashion, bowling both Syms and Kairav Pandya in quick succession to finish with outstanding figures of 2 for 3 from 2.4 overs. Kidmore End's total of 72 for 8 always looked below par.
The Sabres' chase began purposefully as Akula and Jithendriya put on 24 for the opening wicket. Jithendriya fell for 2, caught by Tom Roach off Minnaar, but Akula remained composed at the other end, finding the boundary four times during his knock. He put on a further 19 with Setia for the second wicket before Kidmore End's bowlers engineered a wobble through the middle order.
Setia was held by De Savoye off Theo Pawley for just 1 from 20 balls, and Vedalanakar followed for a duck, caught by Roach off Syms. When Yusuf Malik was bowled by Tom Hughes without scoring and Akula himself was eventually bowled by De Savoye for 31 with the score on 59, Kidmore End sensed an unlikely opportunity. Edward Duvall's dismissal by Robinson for 5 made it 61 for 6, and the match briefly hung in the balance.
Elias Haidari and Yuvraj Singh Kaur settled any nerves with an unbroken seventh-wicket stand. Yuvraj proved the more assertive of the pair, clubbing a six during a quickfire 8 not out from 7 balls, while Haidari contributed a calm 3 not out. The pair saw Sonning home in 15.4 overs, an identical duration to Kidmore End's innings. A generous 23 extras from the opposition — including 19 wides — eased the Sabres' passage considerably, ensuring the home side claimed the full 20 league points.
