Match Report

Stingers Sting Kidmore End as Dawes Leads the Way at King George's Field

Sonning U11 Stingers secured a well-deserved victory over Kidmore End in the Girls U11 Super 6s North league fixture at King George's Field on 18th June, posting 36 for 1 before restricting the visitors to 25 for 0 in a disciplined all-round display.

Having been asked to bat first after Kidmore End won the toss and elected to field, the Stingers found scoring difficult in the early overs. Florence Alden, Charlotte Hickman, Megan Symes and Eleanor Hatchett-Walker each contributed a single run apiece as the Kidmore End bowlers kept things tight. Hickman was the only Sonning batter dismissed, falling with the score on just 2, bowled by Zoona.

The complexion of the innings changed dramatically when Chloe Dawes strode to the crease at number five. Dawes top-scored with an excellent 9 runs, including a crisp boundary four, providing the impetus the Stingers needed in the latter stages. Captain Isabella Partridge chipped in with 3 to add further respectability to the total. Extras played a significant role too, with 20 added to the Sonning tally — 15 of which came from wides — as the Kidmore End attack struggled with their accuracy at times.

The visiting bowlers had mixed fortunes. Zoona claimed the only wicket of the innings but proved expensive with 5 wides across her two overs. Evie conceded 10 runs from her two overs, while India and Anabelle were more economical but also contributed wides and no-balls to the extras column.

Defending 36, the Stingers produced an impressive bowling effort across all six bowlers. Charlotte Hickman was the pick of the attack, conceding just a single run from her over with no extras. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker was equally parsimonious, giving away only 1 run from two overs, though 4 wides slightly blotted her figures. Megan Symes bowled tidily with 2 overs for 3 runs.

Kidmore End's batting never truly gained momentum against the disciplined Sonning attack. Captain Polly top-scored for the visitors with 5, while Anabelle contributed 4 at the top of the order. India, Zoona and Lily managed only modest returns, and although Kidmore End finished their 9 overs without losing a wicket, they fell 11 runs short of the target. Their extras tally of 10 — including 9 wides and a no-ball — proved insufficient to bridge the gap.

The victory was built on a solid team effort from the Stingers, with Dawes's batting and the collective bowling discipline proving the decisive factors. Every member of the Sonning squad contributed with the ball, keeping the pressure on throughout the Kidmore End reply and ensuring the home side collected all three league points.
