Match Report

Murphy's Masterclass Steers U15 Scorchers to Commanding Victory at Steventon

Sonning U15 Scorchers posted an impressive 131 for 4 from their 100 balls before restricting Steventon to 91 for 4 in this U15 Hundred Pool 4 fixture at Steventon Village Green on Friday evening. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, captain Max Murphy led from the front with a superb 35 from just 25 deliveries to anchor the Scorchers' innings and set up a comfortable win.

The Scorchers lost Harrison Lott early, bowled by Bobbi Cookson for 4 with the score on just 6. What followed, however, was a match-defining partnership. Aveer Sidhu joined Murphy at the crease and the pair steadily built momentum, with Murphy particularly punishing anything short or wide. Murphy struck seven fours in his blistering knock before retiring not out, while Sidhu contributed a composed 19 from 25 balls, picking off three boundaries before also retiring. Their platform was crucial in pushing the score beyond Steventon's reach.

The middle order kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely. Kanishka Suriarachchi added a brisk 12 from 13 balls before being bowled by Alice Banwell, and Edward Hanson chipped in with 11 before falling to Lilidh Keymer. A brief wobble saw the Scorchers slip from 95 for 2 to 99 for 3, but the lower order responded with authority. Neil Jasti struck 10 from 9 balls, and Ollie Terry was outstanding late on, smashing an unbeaten 17 from just 11 deliveries, including two fours. Their partnership of 30 for the fourth wicket propelled Sonning past 130.

Steventon's bowling attack worked hard, with captain George Mercer the pick of the bowlers, conceding just 14 runs from his 20 balls while claiming the wicket of Jasti. Banwell and Keymer also took a wicket apiece, but 23 extras — including 13 byes — proved costly for the hosts.

In reply, Steventon needed a fast start and found one through Mercer, who led his side's response with a fluent 37 from 25 balls, crashing six boundaries around the ground. His opening stand of 52 with Harry Minter gave the hosts genuine hope, though Minter's contribution was a more watchful 6 from 25 deliveries.

The complexion of the chase changed dramatically once the opening pair retired. Jack Durrant struck first for the Scorchers, bowling Jayden Smith for 2, and Murphy then delivered with the ball as well as the bat, removing William Binning for 5 and Bobbi Cookson for 4 in quick succession. The home side slumped from 52 for the first wicket partnership to 69 for 3, and the required rate spiralled beyond reach.

Neil Jasti completed an excellent all-round display by bowling Bobby Bitmead-Peck for a duck, leaving Steventon reeling at 73 for 4. Nicole Harper (8 not out) and Alice Banwell (7 not out) batted out the remaining balls without further loss, but the damage had been done. The Scorchers' bowling was disciplined throughout, with Christopher Dowse particularly miserly, conceding just 11 runs from his 20 balls, while Timothy Jenner was equally tight with figures of 15 balls for just 6 runs.

Murphy's contribution of 35 runs and two wickets made him the standout performer on the evening, but this was a genuine team effort from the Scorchers, who earned a deserved five points from the fixture to strengthen their position in Pool 4.
