Match Report
Ali's Magnificent Century Not Enough as Sonning Fall Short at Harpsden
Amaad Ali produced a superb unbeaten century but Sonning Sunday 1s were unable to defend their total of 189 for 7 as Harpsden chased down the target with two wickets in hand at Harpsden CC on 12th April.
Captain Richard Skeil won the toss and chose to bat first, opening alongside Dhruv Peshkar. The pair made a steady start before Rod Birkett struck twice to remove both openers, Peshkar bowled for 7 and Skeil caught by skipper Johnny Wright for 21. When Shamitha Widanapathirana fell for a duck, bowled by Wright, Sonning found themselves in early difficulty.
Ali, batting at number three, anchored the innings with composure and increasing authority. He found an able partner in Shenul Widanapathirana, who contributed a valuable 34 before being caught by Will Stevens off Thomas Mitchell. The pair's stand gave the Sonning innings much-needed momentum during the middle overs, with Ali driving the scoring throughout.
The lower order struggled to capitalise, however. Mitchell bowled Aahaan Sharma for 4, while Aashmit Ghosh was caught for a duck off Wright, and wicketkeeper Moksha Suriarachchi was run out for 5. Ali remained imperious at the other end, carrying his bat for a magnificent 101 not out — the centrepiece of Sonning's total of 189 for 7 from their 35 overs. Mitchell (2-23 from 4 overs), Birkett (2-18 from 4) and Wright (2-32 from 7) were the pick of the Harpsden attack.
Sonning's bowlers made an encouraging start in reply, with Saranjeet Singh removing both Harpsden openers. Emil Rayfield was caught for 11 and Niranjankumar Adarshi bowled for 8, while Aashmit Ghosh had Thomas Dawson bowled for 6 to leave the hosts at a precarious position with three wickets down cheaply.
Will Stevens steadied the Harpsden chase with a composed 32 before Asad Imam bowled him, and Ghosh added the scalp of Ollie McConkey for 12. At 5 wickets down, the game appeared to be tilting Sonning's way. Scott Harris kept the chase alive with a brisk 23 before being run out, and when Imam had captain Wright caught for 4, Harpsden were 7 down and still needing runs.
Charlie Cooper, batting at number eight, proved the decisive figure. His unbeaten 47 was the innings that ultimately won the match for Harpsden, and he found willing support from Thomas Mitchell, who contributed 18 not out in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand that carried the hosts past the target. Harpsden reached 193 for 8 in 34 overs, with 28 extras — including 14 byes — proving costly additions to the Sonning bowling figures.
Despite Ali's outstanding individual effort and a disciplined collective bowling display that saw seven Sonning bowlers used — Imam (2-30), Singh (2-30) and Ghosh (2-37) leading the way — it was Cooper's late heroics that denied Sonning in a match they had appeared well placed to win.
