Kestrels Soar to Dominant Victory as Batters Run Riot Against Purley
Sonning U9 Kestrels produced a commanding all-round display to secure a comprehensive victory over Purley on Thames in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South West league on 23rd June 2024. Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Svarup Huggi's side restricted the visitors to just 78 for 8 before their batters unleashed a blistering response, amassing 195 for 2 to win with considerable ease.
Purley's innings never truly got off the ground against disciplined Sonning bowling. The Kestrels shared the wickets around superbly, with eight different bowlers contributing across the 20 overs. Vivaan Ramesh delivered the standout bowling performance of the match, returning the remarkable figures of 2-0-0-1, including two maiden overs — a quite extraordinary achievement at any level. Ridith Kandadi was equally parsimonious, conceding just five runs from his two overs while also bowling a maiden.
Edward Heath claimed the best figures with 2 for 16 from his two overs, while Suraj Iyer, Sai Sathvik Cherukuri and Svarup Huggi each chipped in with a wicket apiece. The Purley batters found runs hard to come by, with Harry Smalley (9 off 12 balls) and their captain Daniel Leary (8 off 13) the only ones to offer meaningful resistance. Arlo Rawlinson's unbeaten 8 from 12 balls provided a late flourish, but 46 extras told the story of a side under constant pressure.
The Kestrels' reply was nothing short of devastating. Ridith Kandadi top-scored with a magnificent 32 off just 14 balls, cracking seven boundaries in an innings that showcased tremendous timing and shot selection for a player of his age. Opening the batting, Sai Sathvik Cherukuri was equally destructive, smashing 30 off 19 deliveries with seven fours to set the tone from the very first over.
Vivaan Ramesh, having already produced a match-defining spell with the ball, underlined his all-round credentials with a superb 24 off 15 balls, finding the boundary five times. His contributions with both bat and ball made him arguably the player of the match. Captain Svarup Huggi led from the front as well, striking a brisk 13 off 9 balls with three fours, while Oliver Baker contributed a composed 15 from 14 deliveries.
The Purley bowlers toiled hard but found little joy. Arlo Rawlinson bowled tidily, conceding just 4 runs from two overs including a maiden, while Harry Smalley showed control with figures of 2-1-10-0. However, the remaining attack struggled to contain the Sonning batters, with Leo Hallifix (28 from 3 overs) and Felix Fletcher (31 from 2 overs) bearing the brunt of the assault.
With 134 runs separating the two sides at the close, this was a thoroughly dominant performance from the Kestrels. The combination of tight, wicket-taking bowling and aggressive, fearless batting proved far too much for a Purley side that competed gamely but were ultimately outclassed in every department.
