Sonning 4th XI Undone by Devastating Taplow Bowling Despite Spirited Lower-Order Resistance

Sonning 4th XI travelled to Phoenix Sports Ground on Saturday for their Division 10B encounter against Taplow and, despite an excellent bowling performance in the first innings, were dismantled for just 82 in reply to Taplow's 178 all out, suffering a comprehensive defeat.

Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Kabir Dave's decision initially appeared well-judged. Taplow's openers Farhaan Qureshi (27 off 32 balls) and Raheel Ahmed (26 off 41) put on 57 for the first wicket, but Sonning's bowlers gradually wrestled back control. Geethika Jyothis made the breakthrough, bowling Qureshi, and Edward McLoughlin accounted for Sumit Bankar cheaply as Taplow slipped from 57 for nought to 68 for two.

The pivotal figure in Taplow's innings was Umair Butt, who top-scored with a fluent 42 off 56 balls, striking nine boundaries. After Ahmed fell caught by Joe Donohue off Dave's bowling at 81 for three, Butt anchored the middle order. Dave was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 3 for 9 from eight overs with five maidens — a miserly spell that kept Taplow in check through the middle period. He had Simon Goodrham caught off his own bowling and trapped Hamza Ahmed lbw for a duck, leaving Taplow 109 for five.

Butt and Andy Bond (19 off 27) then combined for a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 51 that lifted Taplow to 160 before Arthur Parkes struck. Parkes enjoyed a devastating late spell, taking 3 for 14 from four overs, removing Butt — caught by wicketkeeper Ollie Terry — Bond, and Kuljit Lally in quick succession. Jyothis wrapped up the tail with three wickets of his own, finishing with 3 for 24 from 7.3 overs, including three maidens. Taplow were bowled out for 178 in 35.3 overs, a total bolstered significantly by 43 extras, including 18 wides.

The chase began disastrously. Charles Astwood was bowled by Zubair Butt without scoring in the fifth ball of the innings, and from that moment Sonning's batting simply collapsed. Taplow captain Zubair Butt (3 for 8 from seven overs) and Kuljit Lally (5 for 5 from five overs) were virtually unplayable. Lally's figures were nothing short of extraordinary — three maidens in his five-over spell as he systematically dismantled the Sonning line-up.

Gaurav Jayan, Kyle Dellar-Law, Sagar Dave, and Edward McLoughlin all fell cheaply as Sonning lurched to 10 for five. When Lally bowled both skipper Kabir Dave and Joe Donohue in quick succession, Sonning were staring at 13 for eight and the contest appeared all but over.

What followed was a remarkable rearguard from an unlikely source. Batting at number ten, Geethika Jyothis counter-attacked brilliantly, smashing 34 off just 31 balls with eight fours. Alongside the resolute Toby Fitton, who finished unbeaten on 12 from 52 deliveries, Jyothis put on 56 for the ninth wicket — comfortably the highest partnership of the Sonning innings. Arthur Parkes added a brisk 8 off 10 balls at number eleven, but once Jyothis was trapped lbw by Hamza Ahmed and Parkes was bowled shortly after, Sonning were dismissed for 82 in 22.2 overs, falling 96 runs short of their target.
