Match Report

Zahid's 83 and Goodman's Four-Wicket Haul Not Enough as Sonning Held to a Draw

Sonning's 1st XI were left to rue a draw at King George's Field on Saturday as Finchampstead survived a testing spell from Damario Goodman to close on 182-8, falling 20 runs short of their target of 203 in this Division 1B encounter.

Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to bat on a surface that offered something for both bat and ball throughout the day. Sonning's innings was built around a superb knock of 83 from Mohammed Zahid, who struck 11 fours and a six in a measured 116-ball stay at the crease. After Muhammad Ayub fell for a brisk 14 off 15 balls with the score on 16, Zahid anchored the innings through a series of partnerships that gave Sonning a platform to post a competitive total.

The key stand of the first innings came when Zahid was joined by wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar. The pair added 64 for the fourth wicket, with Peshkar contributing a fluent 33 from 41 deliveries, laced with five boundaries. Their partnership took the score from 71-3 to 135-4 and wrestled the initiative firmly in Sonning's favour during the middle overs.

Finchampstead's bowling attack was led by skipper Paul Stephens, who returned figures of 3-64 from his 15 overs, while Kailan Patel was equally influential with 3-47 from 11 overs. Wicketkeeper Connor Rees held three catches behind the stumps. When Zahid finally fell caught by Rees off Stephens with the score on 164, Sonning were in danger of losing their way, but Shenul Widanapathirana's unbeaten 29 off 36 balls and a late cameo of 6 not out from just three balls by Damario Goodman pushed the total to 202-8 from their 52 overs.

Finchampstead's reply began positively as openers Matthew Eldridge and Aryan Gavankar put on 40 for the first wicket, with Eldridge striking two fours and a six in his 23 off 23 balls before being bowled by Goodman. It was the start of a devastating spell from the Sonning seamer, who struck again immediately to remove Gavankar for 19, and then trapped Lewis Smith lbw for a duck to leave the visitors reeling at 63-3.

Connor Rees provided the backbone of the Finchampstead chase, top-scoring with 39 from 59 balls. He struck six fours and was involved in several steady partnerships, but wickets continued to tumble around him. A sharp run out by Amaad Ali accounted for Stuart Parsons for 12, and when Goodman bowled Stephens for 11, Finchampstead had slipped to 102-5 with the required rate climbing.

Louis Crerar threatened to turn the match back in Finchampstead's favour with an excellent 46 off 70 balls, including five fours and a six. His partnerships of 35 with Peter Emes and 27 with Anthony Parson kept the visitors in the contest, but Zahid returned to claim the crucial wickets of Rees, Emes and finally Crerar himself to finish with 3-59 from 14 overs. Goodman's outstanding figures of 4-34 from 15 overs, including three maidens, were instrumental in keeping Sonning in control for much of the chase.

With Crerar's dismissal bringing the score to 182-8 in the 48th over, Finchampstead's remaining batsmen were content to see out the final two overs, denying Sonning the two wickets they needed for victory. Both sides collected three game points apiece, with Sonning's superior bowling bonus points giving them a narrow edge on the day at 15 points to Finchampstead's 14.
