Match Report

Stingers Dominate Wargrave with Comprehensive 74-Run Victory

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball produced a ruthless display with both bat and ball to secure an emphatic victory over Wargrave at Wargrave C.C. on 21 August 2022 in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance – East league fixture. After restricting the hosts to just 44 all out, captain Melissa Pengraeve's side chased down the target with ease, posting 118 for 4 from their 12 overs.

Wargrave won the toss and elected to bat first, but their decision quickly looked misguided as the Stingers' bowling attack strangled the run-scoring from the outset. Grace Phillips was the standout performer with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 4 from her two overs — a spell that left the home side's batting order in tatters. Elinor Longridge was equally impressive, claiming 3 for 11 from two overs to ensure Wargrave could never build any momentum.

Captain Pengraeve chipped in with a tidy spell of her own, conceding just a single run from her over while picking up a wicket, while Chloe Bailey added another scalp with figures of 1 for 5 from two overs. Only Becky Strode, with 10 off 10 balls including two fours, and Anna Smy and Zoe Howe, each contributing 6, offered any real resistance for the hosts as eight wickets tumbled through the innings.

The Stingers' reply was clinical. Chloe Bailey led the charge at the top of the order, striking an aggressive 16 off just 9 balls, finding the boundary four times in an innings that immediately put Sonning on the front foot. Elinor Longridge continued her superb all-round day with 15 off 12 balls, including three fours, to keep the scoreboard ticking at pace.

Siobhan Davis contributed a handy 11 from 9 deliveries at the top, while Katie Barrows was particularly destructive with 10 off just 6 balls, hitting two boundaries in a quickfire cameo. Further down the order, Sophie Eckley added a valuable 11 from 11 balls, and Sharon Fleming weighed in with 9 to ensure the Stingers' batting effort was a genuinely collective one — every single batter reached double figures or close to it.

Wargrave's bowling struggled for consistency throughout, with extras proving a significant factor. The hosts conceded 78 extras in total, including 32 wides and 6 no-balls, which effectively handed the Stingers a substantial proportion of their total. Jigya Kashyap bore the brunt of the punishment, conceding 30 runs from her three overs, while Misbah Bhatti leaked 17 from a single over. Amanda Bayley and Zoe Howe each managed a wicket apiece but could do little to stem the tide.

The margin of victory — 74 runs — underlined the Stingers' dominance across every facet of the match. Longridge's all-round contribution of 3 wickets and 15 runs, combined with Phillips' devastating spell and Bailey's explosive batting, ensured Sonning collected the full three league points in convincing fashion.
