Match Report

Sonning visited Wokingham who had a 100 % record, with a weakened bowling attack with Abbas away and LJ Brown injured. This was a day where everything that could go wrong, did. With skipper Gary Philips late due to circumstances beyond his control, vice-captain JJ Harris lost the toss and Wokingham chose to bat.

With no Abbas or Brown, Steve Mankee, who had never bowled for the first team in the league before, took the new ball with Adeel Razaq. Unfortunately the runs flowed, with neither being able to bowl a consistent line or length and some good batsmen using the lightning outfield to pepper the boundary. Wokingham scored 68 off the first 10 overs and although Duncan Parr and Ian Boyton slowed the rate in the middle of the innings, some good hitting by Berkshire veteran Simon Myles and some lusty blows from J.Fisher saw Wokingham to 283 for 6 off 50 overs, allowing them to declare after making the Sonning fielders chase a lot of leather in the Summer sun. Boyton was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 84 from 18 overs but Sonning’s star performer was wicket keeper James Reilly who took the first 5 dismissals (3 catches and 2 stumpings) and generally looked sharp and tidy behind the stumps.

Wokingham opened the bowling with the old ball and LJ Brown was quickly into his stride reaching a classy 43 before a catastrophic misunderstanding with skipper Phillips led to the injured Aussie being run out. Unfortunately this led to a dramatic collapse from Sonning with only Mark Richards, in his cavalier style and Duncan Parr in his more cautious style looked like they would last for any time. Wickets continued to fall regularly and when last pair Adeel Razaq and James Reilly came together in the 31st over the game seemed over. However, to everyone’s surprise the pair kept going for 12 overs, keeping out veteran swinger Myles who seemed to have the ball on a string and rapid overseas pro Roy. Just as it looked like the pair may hold out for an unlikely draw, Reilly was bowled, to complete a miserable day for Sonning.

Whilst Wokingham are obviously a class team, Sonning need to raise their standard from this poor performance. Bowling, fielding and batting were all below the expected standard.
