Stingers Claim Berkshire Women's Softball Final with Dominant Display Against West Ilsley
Sonning Stingers Soft Ball delivered a commanding performance to win the Berkshire Women's Softball Final, chasing down West Ilsley's total of 71 with considerable ease to post 102 for the loss of just one wicket.
West Ilsley, batting first in the pairs format, found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Sonning bowling and fielding unit. The home side could manage only 71 runs from their allocation whilst losing four wickets, never truly establishing the kind of momentum needed to set a challenging target in a final of this magnitude.
Captain Melissa Pengraeve's side would have been quietly confident at the halfway stage, knowing that a target of 72 was well within their reach. The Stingers set about the chase with authority, and with the pairs format offering every batter the chance to contribute, the Sonning line-up took full advantage.
The reply was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Losing just a single wicket throughout their innings, the Stingers accumulated 102 runs to surpass the target with plenty to spare. The margin of 31 runs told the story of a side that was not content merely to reach the target but wanted to make a emphatic statement on finals day.
Sharon Fleming, Frances Howson, Jenny Armitage, Grace Phillips, Elinor Longridge, Rachel McCabe, Nancy Gorely, and skipper Pengraeve all played their part in what was a genuine squad effort. The collective nature of the performance underlined the strength in depth that had carried Sonning to the final in the first place.
For West Ilsley, the final proved a step too far. Their bowlers struggled to contain a Sonning batting order that looked assured from the outset, and the four wickets they managed to claim in the first innings with the ball were scant consolation in the face of such a comprehensive run chase.
The victory capped a fine season for the Stingers, who earned three competition points for the win and lifted the Berkshire Women's Softball title with a performance that demonstrated their quality across all departments of the game.
