Newbury Power Through to Comfortable Victory as Sonning 4th XI Fall Short

Newbury 3rd XI recorded a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Sonning 4th XI at Henwick Worthy Sports Ground on Saturday, chasing down Sonning's 151-9 with considerable ease. After winning the toss and electing to field, Newbury's disciplined bowling attack restricted Sonning before their batsmen made light work of the target.

Sonning captain Charles Astwood provided a promising start, striking six boundaries in his rapid 33 from just 24 deliveries. He and James Travers (26) built a solid opening partnership of 56, giving Sonning a platform from which they might have expected to post a more imposing total.

Syed Naqi was the mainstay of the Sonning innings, crafting a patient 42 from 81 balls with five boundaries. However, wickets fell regularly at the other end, with only Kabir Dave (19) offering meaningful resistance in the middle order. Matt Manners proved to be the chief destroyer for Newbury, claiming 3-6 from his 3.2 overs, while Dan Floyd provided excellent support with 2-20 from eight economical overs.

Sonning's total of 151-9 from their 37.2 overs always looked vulnerable, despite some determined batting in challenging conditions. Brad Alton (1-37) and Gowthaman Shanmugasundaram (1-12) maintained excellent control with the ball for Newbury, with the latter being particularly economical through his six overs.

In response, Newbury's openers Matt Manners and Jayaprakash Pammula launched a commanding assault on the Sonning attack. Manners struck a fluent 38 before becoming Sunit Bansode's first victim, caught by the bowler himself, but by then Newbury were well on course for victory.

Pammula played the anchor role to perfection, finishing unbeaten on 61 as he guided his side home. Nick Kaxe contributed a brisk 24 before falling to Bansode, stumped by wicketkeeper Henry Cook in what proved to be Sonning's final breakthrough. Brad Alton (18 not out) joined Pammula to complete the formalities, as Newbury reached their target in just 21.1 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Sonning's bowlers struggled to make an impact, with only Bansode (2-56) taking wickets. Aahaan Sharma bowled a tidy spell of 0-16 from his five overs, but Kabir Dave (0-42) and Syed Adnan (0-31) proved expensive as Newbury's batsmen dominated proceedings to secure a convincing league victory.
