Match Report
Widanapathirana's Sublime Century Steers Sonning 3rd XI to Commanding Victory at Woodford Park
Sonning 3rd XI posted an imposing 292 for 5 from their 45 overs before bowling Woodley out for 234 to secure a comprehensive win in Division 7A at Woodford Park on 20 June. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, captain Arun Kumar Pera's side responded emphatically, with Shamitha Widanapathirana delivering a match-defining unbeaten century.
Openers Aseem Shafi and Gaurav Jayan gave Sonning a strong platform, putting on 71 for the first wicket. Jayan was the more aggressive of the pair, striking six fours in his 33 from 44 balls before being caught by wicketkeeper Amol Lotke off the bowling of Pradeep Kadloor. Shafi followed shortly after for 29, trapped lbw by Sathishkumar Selvaraj, leaving Sonning 77 for 2.
Rahul Sood, promoted to number three, maintained the momentum with a brisk 39 from 42 deliveries, lacing six boundaries during a third-wicket stand of 77 with Widanapathirana. It was Widanapathirana, however, who truly seized control. The Sri Lankan batsman compiled a magnificent unbeaten 105 from just 85 balls, dispatching 14 fours and a six in an innings of sustained authority. He anchored partnerships of 30 with Pera and 55 with Daniel Edwards, ensuring Sonning never lost their grip on proceedings.
The late onslaught came from Aashmit Ghosh, who blazed an extraordinary 36 not out from just 15 balls, crashing five fours and two sixes to lift the total past 290 in the closing overs. Woodley's eight bowlers all went at more than five runs per over, with Selvaraj's 2 for 52 from nine overs the best of a difficult afternoon in the field. The hosts also conceded 30 extras, including 21 wides.
Woodley's chase got off to the worst possible start when captain Tajdar Jawaid was caught by Asad Imam off Zain Shahid's first delivery without scoring. Shahid struck again to remove Lotke for 11, and when Akash Vasa had Muthu Nagaratham caught — taking the catch himself — and then dismissed Kadloor for a duck via another Imam catch, Woodley were reeling at 43 for 4.
Rakesh Sriramoju and Anish Pandey then mounted a spirited counter-attack, putting on 89 for the fifth wicket. Sriramoju was the more explosive, striking 12 fours and a six in his 71 from 64 balls before being bowled by Imam. Pandey continued to resist with an accomplished 64 from 65 balls, anchoring further partnerships of 22 with Mandeep Singh and 37 with Prasad Kulkarni, but when he was caught by Ghosh off Imam's bowling, the required rate had climbed beyond reach.
Harsh Sahay struck a defiant unbeaten 31 from 18 balls, but Vasa wrapped up proceedings by having Ajay Singh caught by Imam, finishing with excellent figures of 3 for 44 from 8.5 overs. Imam was equally influential with 3 for 48 from his eight overs, while also taking three catches in the field to cap an outstanding all-round contribution. Sonning collected 22 league points from a victory built on a dominant batting display and disciplined bowling under pressure.
