Sonning 3rd XI's Middle-Order Collapse Proves Costly in Defeat at Kidmore End

Sonning 3rd XI's batting frailties in the middle overs undermined what had been a promising start as Kidmore End chased down 150 with four wickets and nearly ten overs to spare in this Division 8B encounter at Crowmarsh Gifford on Saturday.

Asked to bat first after Kidmore End skipper Todd Butler won the toss and inserted the visitors, Sonning openers Aseem Shafi and Shamitha Widanapathirana put on 34 for the first wicket to lay a solid foundation. Widanapathirana struck three boundaries in a brisk 14 from 21 balls before falling caught by Nathan Ruegg off the bowling of Tyler Sheldon, and from that point the innings fell apart in dramatic fashion.

Will Nassau-Lake produced a devastating spell that tore through the Sonning middle order. The seamer's figures of 4-13 from eight overs, including four maidens, were exceptional, as he removed Max Murphy (1), Rahul Sood (2), Hugo Popplewell (0) and Sophie Smith (2) to leave Sonning reeling at 57-6. Captain Arun Kumar Pera was also dismissed cheaply, trapped lbw by Nidhi Samuel for a duck, as five wickets tumbled for just seven runs between the first and fifth wicket partnerships.

Throughout the carnage at the other end, Shafi batted with admirable composure, anchoring the innings with a determined 41 from 81 deliveries. His knock included five boundaries and he was the last recognised resistance, putting on 39 for the seventh wicket with Sam Taylor before Hedley Ruegg finally bowled him. Taylor then took up the mantle, striking six fours in an aggressive 35 from 47 balls that breathed life back into the Sonning innings. Ruegg finished with 3-20 from his eight overs, dismissing both Shafi and Taylor as well as Asad Imam, who was caught by Samuel for nought.

An unbroken 38-run stand between Jack Durrant (12 not out) and Ollie Terry (18 not out) for the final wicket ensured Sonning reached 149-9 from their 40 overs, a total that looked below par but gave the bowlers something to work with, particularly with 24 extras helping to inflate the score.

Kidmore End's reply began shakily as Jack Durrant had Will Nassau-Lake caught by Hugo Popplewell with the score on 18, and Max Murphy immediately trapped Paul Lawson lbw for 11 to leave the hosts 18-2. A composed 45-run partnership between Sanjeev Sadhwani (12) and Nathan Ruegg (21) steadied the ship for the home side, and though both fell with the score at 63 and 71 respectively, the required rate was always manageable.

The match was effectively decided by a punishing fifth-wicket partnership of 44 between Aadit Pandey and Nidhi Samuel. Pandey clubbed two sixes and a four in his 22 from 32 balls before being caught by Asad Imam off Murphy's bowling, but it was Samuel who proved the match-winner. His 39 from just 35 deliveries, laced with five fours and a six, carried Kidmore End to the brink of victory before he was caught by Arun Kumar Pera off Shamitha Widanapathirana. By then, the target was within touching distance, and Roan Coetzee and Tyler Sheldon saw their side home at 151-6 in the 31st over.

Sonning's bowlers had shared the wickets around — Murphy (2-37), Durrant (1-15), Imam (1-27), Terry (1-16) and Widanapathirana (1-4) all contributing — but 38 extras in the second innings, including 17 wides and 15 byes, made their task considerably harder. It was a frustrating afternoon for Arun Kumar Pera's side, who will reflect on that devastating middle-order collapse as the moment the match slipped away.
