Stingers Fall Short as Wargrave Prove Too Strong at Home

Sonning's Stingers Super 8s suffered a comprehensive defeat at Wargrave Cricket Club on 1st June, falling 57 runs short in their pursuit of 126 in this Super 8 Development Group C league fixture. Having won the toss and opted to field first, captain Sharon Fleming's side were unable to contain Wargrave's batting before struggling with the bat themselves.

Wargrave posted a formidable 125 for 4 from their 16 overs, with Tia Veevers the standout performer. Batting at number seven, Veevers smashed an explosive 32 from just 13 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries in a devastating display that transformed the innings in the closing stages. Opener Amy Bennett also contributed a useful 18 from 14 balls at the top of the order, including two fours, while Kaelin Dell chipped in with 11.

The Sonning bowling attack found it difficult to stem the flow of runs, with extras totalling 30 — including 24 wides — proving costly. Frances Howson was the pick of the Stingers' bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 13 from her three overs, while Melissa Pengraeve and Katie Barrows each claimed a wicket apiece. However, Grace Phillips had a tough outing, conceding 32 runs from three overs including eight wides and two no-balls.

The chase never truly got off the ground for Sonning. Frances Howson was dismissed having scored just 2 from 12 balls at the top of the order, and Katie Barrows and Jenny Armitage managed only 1 run each from their 12-ball allocations, leaving the Stingers well behind the required rate.

Melissa Pengraeve offered the most resistance with the bat, top-scoring for Sonning with 15 from 14 deliveries, while Sharon Fleming made 7. The remainder of the batting card made for grim reading, with Grace Phillips (2), Rachel McCabe (4), and Louise Newton (2) all dismissed as the innings stuttered to 68 for 8 from the full 16 overs. Notably, both Phillips and McCabe were dismissed twice during the innings under the pairs format.

Wargrave's bowling was disciplined across the board. Tia Veevers followed up her batting heroics with an outstanding spell of 2 for 6 from three overs, including a maiden, while Amy Bennett mirrored those figures with 2 for 12 from her four overs. Kaelin Dell also claimed 2 for 13, and Roisin McMahon picked up a wicket with her single over. Though extras again featured heavily — 34 in total for the Sonning innings — Wargrave's bowlers never allowed the Stingers to build any meaningful momentum.

The defeat leaves Sonning with just a single league point from the fixture, while Wargrave collected a full six points. It was a match where the Stingers were outperformed in all three departments, with Wargrave's lower-order acceleration through Veevers proving the decisive factor in setting an ultimately unassailable target.
