Scorchers Fall Short as Wokingham Chase Down 141 in U15 Cup
Sonning U15 Scorchers posted a competitive 140 for 4 from their 20 overs at Wokingham Cricket Club on Monday evening, but the hosts chased down the target with seven balls to spare to claim victory in the U15 Cup West Zone.
Winning the toss and electing to field, Wokingham were made to work hard during the Scorchers' innings, which was built around an excellent half-century from Sid Anilkumar. Opening the batting, Anilkumar struck seven fours in a fluent 52 from 45 balls before retiring not out, anchoring the innings from start to finish. He and Harrison Lott put on 45 for the first wicket, with Lott contributing an attacking 29 from 25 balls, including five boundaries, before being caught by Daniel Slade off the bowling of Ibrahim Khan.
Captain Max Murphy then joined Anilkumar and the pair constructed a crucial 84-run second-wicket partnership that shifted the momentum firmly in Sonning's favour. Murphy played with composure, hitting four fours in his 28 from 33 deliveries before falling bowled to Khan. By the time Murphy departed at 129 for 2, the Scorchers were well placed to launch a late assault.
However, Ibrahim Khan's intervention proved decisive with the ball. Having already accounted for Lott and Murphy, he struck twice more in quick succession, dismissing Ethan Towner for 4 and Harry Farrington for a golden duck, both bowled, as the Scorchers slipped from 129 for 2 to 133 for 4. Khan's remarkable figures of 4 for 19 from his four overs kept Wokingham firmly in the contest. Elliot Dawes steadied things with an unbeaten 9, and Jack Durrant added a single as Sonning reached 140.
The Wokingham reply was anchored by a commanding opening partnership of 83 between Yajat Kothari and Thomas Ballantine. The pair batted with authority against Sonning's opening bowlers, with Ballantine the more aggressive of the two, hitting three fours in his 38 from 36 balls. Kothari was equally impressive, compiling 34 from 44 balls with three boundaries of his own, and together they ensured the required rate never climbed beyond comfortable levels.
Murphy, switching from bat to ball, provided the breakthrough that gave the Scorchers hope. The skipper removed Ballantine lbw with the score on 83, then bowled Kothari at 100 for 2 to bring himself figures of 2 for 23 at that stage. When he had Daniel Slade caught by Jack Durrant for 18 to make it 115 for 3, and a sharp run out accounted for Ibrahim Khan at 121 for 4, Sonning sensed an unlikely turnaround.
It was not to be. Abdullah Adnan arrived at the crease with intent, smashing an unbeaten 21 from just 10 balls, including three fours, to seize control of the chase. Alongside Vyan Mehra, who contributed a steady 6 not out, Adnan steered Wokingham home to 144 for 4 in 18.5 overs. Murphy finished with excellent figures of 3 for 23 from his four overs, but his efforts with the ball, much like his batting contribution, ultimately went unrewarded as the Scorchers exited the cup competition.
