Stingers Fall Short as Wokingham Claim Friendly Victory

Sonning U11 Stingers suffered a defeat at the hands of Wokingham U11 Girls on Sunday 21st April, falling 35 runs short in this pairs format friendly. Having won the toss and elected to field, the Stingers were unable to contain Wokingham's batting before struggling to build momentum with the bat themselves.

Wokingham posted a competitive total of 67 for 2 from their eight overs, with captain Iris Pritchard leading from the front. Pritchard struck an impressive 15 from just 10 balls, hitting three fours in a display of clean, aggressive batting that gave her side a commanding platform. Mariam Khan provided excellent support, smashing 9 off only 4 deliveries, including two boundaries, to further bolster the Wokingham score.

The Stingers' bowling unit found it difficult to stem the flow of runs, with 32 extras conceded across the innings — 15 wides and 15 no-balls proving costly. Isabella Partridge was the standout with the ball for Sonning, claiming the only wicket to be taken by a named bowler while conceding 10 runs from her over, and crucially bowling without a wide or no-ball. Nelisha Widanapathirana also impressed with a tidy spell of 1-0-3-0, conceding the fewest runs of any Sonning bowler. Chloe Dawes was similarly economical, going for just 5 from her over.

Chasing 68 to win, the Stingers found run-scoring extremely difficult against disciplined Wokingham bowling. Emilia Brand-Smith delivered the most miserly over of the match, conceding just a single run from her six legal deliveries without a wide or no-ball in sight. Jasmine Malhan was equally impressive, taking a wicket while giving away only 2 runs from her over.

Jessica Hawkins top-scored for Sonning with 3 runs from 8 balls, but no batter was able to find the boundary as the Stingers mustered only 7 runs from the bat across the entire innings. The total of 32 for 5 owed much to 45 extras conceded by Wokingham — including 28 wides and 10 penalty runs — but even that generosity was insufficient to bridge the gap.

Iris Pritchard, Millie Ballantine, and Jasmine Malhan each claimed a wicket apiece for Wokingham, while Isabella Partridge and Megan Symes were dismissed twice and once respectively in a challenging afternoon for the Sonning batting lineup. Mia Ho and Chloe Dawes were also dismissed once each as the Stingers lost five wickets across their eight overs.

Despite the result, there were positives for the Stingers to take from the contest. Partridge's wicket-taking over with the ball and Widanapathirana's accuracy stood out, while the experience of competitive cricket in the early weeks of the season will serve these young players well as they continue to develop their skills.
