Shuttleworth Century Proves Too Much as Sonning 4th XI Fall Short in Chase

Sonning 4th XI's decision to field first after winning the toss at Yateley Manor School backfired as Cove wicketkeeper Robert Shuttleworth produced a magnificent unbeaten 111 to power the visitors to 269 for 6 from their 40 overs in this Division 9C encounter on 27th June.

Shuttleworth was the constant throughout the Cove innings, batting from number two and remaining at the crease for all 40 overs. He struck 15 fours and two sixes from 125 deliveries, anchoring partnerships with virtually every batting partner. After opener Louis Risebro fell for 7 with the score on 29, bowled by Arnav Duvvuri, Shuttleworth found an able ally in Dush Patel, who contributed 33 from 46 balls in a second-wicket stand of 81 that laid the platform for the imposing total.

Arnav Duvvuri was the standout bowler for Sonning, returning excellent figures of 2 for 25 from his eight overs, including a maiden — comfortably the most economical of the home attack. He removed both Risebro and Abhishek Chaudhary (20) to claim the key early wickets. Pranay Abhijeet was similarly tidy, conceding just 25 from his seven overs and picking up the wicket of Patel, caught in the field. James Haxell also took two wickets, dismissing Ethan Lee (4) and Harrison Sivakumaran (17), though he proved expensive at 63 from his eight overs. Sreekanth Thekkedathu Kadalayil's aggressive 30 from just 19 balls, peppered with six fours, ensured the middle overs yielded rich returns for Cove, and a total of 45 extras — including 18 byes and 17 wides — further inflated the scoreboard.

Facing a daunting target of 270, captain Matthew Dawes promoted himself to open alongside Dhiren Panchal. The pair put on 43 for the first wicket, with Dawes the more aggressive, striking three fours on his way to 25 before falling caught by Rahees Chaudhry off the bowling of Dush Patel. Panchal had earlier departed for 9, also to Patel, who finished with the excellent figures of 2 for 40 from his full allocation of eight overs.

The third-wicket partnership between Elliot Dawes and Duvvuri gave Sonning genuine hope of mounting a serious challenge. The pair added 126 together, with Elliot Dawes playing the dominant hand. He struck 12 fours in a fluent unbeaten 92 from 99 balls, timing the ball beautifully through the off side and showing the composure needed for such a demanding chase. Duvvuri complemented him superbly with 44 from 61 deliveries, finding the boundary four times before being bowled by Harrison Sivakumaran with the score on 184.

Despite the quality of the Dawes-Duvvuri stand, the required rate had climbed too steeply during the earlier overs when Cove's opening bowlers, particularly Umair Chaudhry with his miserly 18 from seven overs, kept the scoring in check. With the target still 78 runs distant when Duvvuri fell in the 37th over, the asking rate was beyond reach. Siddharth Kumar arrived to make an unbeaten 2, and Sonning closed on 192 for 3 from their 40 overs, falling 77 runs short.

It was a defeat softened by several encouraging individual displays. Elliot Dawes's near-century was the innings of the day from a Sonning perspective, while Duvvuri's all-round contribution of 2 for 25 with the ball and 44 with the bat underlined his value to the side. However, the 45 extras conceded in the field and the inability to break through Shuttleworth's resistance ultimately proved the difference in a match that got away from Sonning in the first innings.
