Match Report
Sonning 3rd XI Undone by Devastating Checkendon Opening Stand at Knowl Hill
Sonning 3rd XI's total of 202 for 7 proved woefully insufficient as Checkendon's openers Karan Sheth and Vikas Sharma put on a breathtaking 171-run opening partnership to chase down the target with 7 wickets and nearly 22 overs to spare in this Division 7A encounter at Knowl Hill on Saturday.
Captain Sam Taylor won the toss and elected to bat, but Sonning's innings began inauspiciously. Rahul Sood fell without scoring, caught off the impressive Viral Khamar, who finished with excellent figures of 2-17 from eight overs including four maidens. Rishabh Singh followed for a duck, trapped lbw by his Checkendon namesake, and at 14 for 2 the hosts were in early trouble.
Aveer Sidhu and Kyle Dellar-Law steadied the ship with a partnership of 34 for the second wicket. Sidhu struck five boundaries in his 25 before being caught off Khamar, while Dellar-Law contributed a handy 28 from 38 balls, including four fours and a six, before falling caught off Sourabh Sharma with the score on 69 for 3.
The real rescue act came from wicketkeeper Harrison Lott and Akash Vasa, who combined for a magnificent fifth-wicket partnership of 108 runs that transformed the innings. Lott anchored proceedings with a patient 60 from 113 deliveries, hitting eight fours and a six during a determined stay at the crease. Vasa was the more aggressive partner, smashing eight boundaries in his rapid 48 from just 45 balls. The pair took Sonning from a precarious 90 for 4 to 198 for 5 before Lott was run out by Kartik Chitta. Vasa fell three runs later, caught off Sharma, and Sonning declared on 202 for 7. The 33 extras conceded by Checkendon's bowlers, including 24 wides, also contributed handsomely.
What followed in the second innings was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Sheth was utterly destructive, blazing 92 from just 51 balls with fourteen fours and four sixes. Sharma matched his partner's intent at the other end, striking 74 from 65 deliveries with ten fours and four sixes of his own. Together they plundered 171 runs for the first wicket, rendering Sonning's total entirely academic.
Shahbaz Ali eventually provided Sonning with a glimmer of hope, having Sharma caught by Taylor and then removing Sudhir Kothem for 1, caught by Lott behind the stumps. Yuvraj Singh Kaur also claimed the prized scalp of Sheth, who was caught by Kyle Dellar-Law, but at 177 for 2, the damage was long done. Shailesh Pandey cracked an unbeaten 16 from 11 balls to see Checkendon home in just 23.1 overs.
It was a chastening afternoon for Sonning's bowlers, none of whom managed a maiden over. Ali's figures of 2-30 from six overs represented the best of an otherwise difficult outing, while the remaining five bowlers shared just one wicket between them at a combined cost of 164 runs. The comprehensive defeat leaves Sonning with just 7 bonus points to show for their efforts in what proved a sobering day at Knowl Hill.
