Match Report

Scorchers Fall Just Short as Emmbrook & Bearwood Edge Tight Friendly

Sonning U11 Scorchers suffered a narrow three-run defeat to Emmbrook & Bearwood in a friendly at Reading Blue Coat School's Lower Field on 21 May 2023, with the visitors posting 128 for 7 from their 20 overs before the hosts replied with 125 for 8.

Captain Ibrahim Ali Mir won the toss and chose to field, and the decision initially looked promising as he struck early with the ball, claiming a wicket in his opening two-over spell while conceding just nine runs. The Scorchers' bowling attack was shared across all ten players, each delivering two overs, but discipline proved difficult to maintain. Extras proved enormously costly for the home side, with 103 extras — including 32 wides and 25 byes — making up the vast majority of Emmbrook & Bearwood's total. Sankalp Avadhanula top-scored for the visitors with a brisk 18 off 14 balls, striking two fours, while Theo Clark contributed 11 from 10 deliveries, also hitting a pair of boundaries.

The pick of the Sonning bowlers was wicketkeeper Archie Dyson, who turned in an excellent spell of 2-4 from his two overs, including a maiden — a rare achievement in junior cricket. Frederick Parkes (1-6) and George Wallace (1-5) also bowled tidily and picked up a wicket apiece. However, the loose deliveries from other bowlers, particularly Finn Reid's ten wides and Charlie Bright's seven, allowed the opposition total to balloon beyond what the bat alone would have suggested.

In reply, the Scorchers needed 129 to win and set about the chase with determination. Opener Shubh Vedalankar got things moving with 11 off 13 balls, including a four, before Eshan Wang Kumar added six. Contributions came from throughout the order, with Archie Dyson making 10 from 12 balls at number five and Charlie Bright striking 11 off 12 deliveries with a boundary.

The standout batting performance came from Monty Thomas, who top-scored for Sonning with a fluent 17 off 15 balls, cracking two fours in an innings that briefly raised hopes of an unlikely victory. Henry Bright chipped in with 11 from 14, including a four, while Finn Reid made a useful 10 from 10 balls at number seven.

Despite the broad contributions, the Scorchers lost eight wickets during their innings, and those dismissals at regular intervals ultimately stalled momentum at crucial stages. Monty Humphrey was the most effective bowler for the visitors, taking 2-3 from his two overs in a remarkably economical spell that applied significant pressure. Sankalp Avadhanula, Maxim Jutsum, and Aidan Nixon each claimed a wicket apiece, though Nixon's 12 wides meant his spell was expensive.

The Scorchers benefited from 71 extras of their own — including 35 penalty runs — but it was not quite enough, as they finished on 125 for 8 at the close of their 20 overs, falling three runs short of the target. It was an encouraging display with the bat from the home side, with every player reaching at least two runs, but the costly extras conceded in the first innings proved to be the decisive factor in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
