Sharks Fall Short as Nethersole's Five-Wicket Haul Proves Decisive at White Waltham
Sonning U11 Sharks suffered defeat away to White Waltham in the U11 T16 Pairs North East league on 23rd July, posting 101 from their 20 overs before the hosts secured victory with 98 for 5 — fewer runs but crucially fewer wickets lost, which proved the difference in this pairs format encounter.
White Waltham won the toss and inserted the Sharks, who found scoring difficult against a disciplined home attack. Daniel Barton was the standout performer with the bat for Sonning, top-scoring with an enterprising 21 from just 16 balls, though his innings was punctuated by four dismissals which cost the Sharks dearly under the five-run penalty system. Monty Thomas (9 off 13, including a boundary) and Charlie Bright (8 off 11, also hitting a four) gave the innings a reasonable start, but no other batter managed to convert starts into substantial scores.
The star of the first innings was undoubtedly White Waltham's Harrison Nethersole, who produced a remarkable spell of 3-5-5-1, claiming five wickets while conceding just five runs from his three overs, including a maiden. His devastating accuracy was the primary reason the Sharks lost 12 wickets in total — each one adding five penalty runs to the deduction column. Arabella Nethersole complemented with tidy figures of 1 for 7 from three overs, while Thomas Spread (1-11), Esther Buekers (1-9), Jacob Woest (1-10) and captain Sam Ruddle (1-8) all chipped in with wickets.
The Sharks' total of 101 included a significant 50 extras — 19 wides, 15 byes, 10 no-balls and 6 leg byes — which kept the scoreboard ticking even when bat struggled to meet ball consistently. Without that generous extras tally, Sonning's batters contributed just 51 runs between them from 120 deliveries faced.
In reply, White Waltham's chase was anchored by Harri Jones, who played the innings of the match with a fluent 25 from 19 balls. William Cook added 11 from 12 deliveries and Hector Hewitt contributed a composed 10 off 14 balls. Crucially, the home side lost only five wickets across their 20 overs, meaning they conceded just 25 in penalty runs compared to the Sharks' costly 60.
Sonning's bowlers worked hard but struggled to take wickets regularly enough to apply pressure. Lewis Flanigan was the most economical, conceding just three runs from his two overs, while Charlie Bright bowled with commendable control, returning figures of 0 for 10 from three overs including a maiden. Satvick Iyengar and William Butterfield were the only Sharks bowlers to claim wickets, each taking one apiece. However, Logan Powell's two overs proved expensive at 19 runs, including six wides and two no-balls, and Daniel Barton also leaked extras with six wides and two no-balls from his spell.
The result ultimately hinged on wickets lost rather than runs scored. While the Sharks posted a higher run total, their 12 dismissals generated 60 penalty runs against them, whereas White Waltham's five wickets cost only 25. It was a harsh lesson for captain Idris Malik's side in the importance of preserving wickets in the pairs format, where occupation of the crease can matter just as much as run-scoring.
