Spartans Fall Short as Boyne Hill Claim Victory in Under-11 League Clash
Sonning U11 Spartans travelled to Boyne Hill on 14 June for a BYCL Under-11 Challenge (Tier 1) fixture and, having won the toss and elected to bat, were ultimately unable to post a sufficient total as the hosts chased down their target with some comfort, finishing on 111 for 7 against Sonning's 85 for 7.
Captain Freddie Jansen chose to bat first on what proved a testing surface for both sides, with extras playing a significant role throughout the contest. Harrison Kidd and Jansen himself opened the batting for the Spartans, contributing 2 and 5 respectively as they looked to lay a platform. Savraj Sall offered some early impetus with 7 off 10 balls, including a boundary, while Veeraj Sall added 6 from 11 deliveries with another four, though the latter was dismissed once during his innings.
The standout performer with the bat for Sonning was Muhammad Abdurrahman Baig, who top-scored with a patient 13 from 29 balls, occupying the crease across a significant portion of the innings and providing much-needed stability in the middle order. Ved Patwa was the other notable contributor, striking a brisk 10 off just 9 balls with a four, though he was dismissed twice. Isabella Partridge chipped in with 5 from 13 balls, and Megan Symes added 3, but Monish Karthik Saimpu endured a difficult outing, failing to score from his 9 deliveries while being dismissed three times.
Boyne Hill's bowling was shared across nine bowlers, with Vivaan Jain the most impressive, returning excellent figures of 2 for 3 from his two overs. Hugo Parsons was equally tidy, claiming 1 for 6 from three overs including a maiden, while Hriyaan Kanabar also bowled a maiden in his spell of 2-1-4-0. Extras were plentiful, however, with 36 added to the Spartans' total — 24 of them wides — helping inflate the score beyond what the batters alone managed.
Boyne Hill's reply was built on contributions spread throughout the order. Hugo Parsons led the way with an enterprising 16 off 14 balls, finding the boundary twice, while Louis Fowler matched that aggression with 14 from 11 deliveries, also hitting two fours. Jack Meredith played an important hand lower down the order with 14 off 12 balls including two boundaries, and Vivaan Jain added an unbeaten 10 from 9 to ensure the hosts crossed the line. Harrison Bradley got the innings off to a positive start with 9 before being dismissed.
The Spartans' bowlers worked hard in the field but were hampered by 42 extras conceded, including 30 wides and 4 no-balls. Harrison Kidd was the pick of the Sonning attack, taking 2 for 19 from his three overs, while Savraj Sall and Muhammad Abdurrahman Baig each claimed a wicket apiece, both finishing with figures of 1 for 10 from three overs. Veeraj Sall also picked up a wicket, though his two overs proved expensive at 18 runs. Yannis Marti was economical with 0 for 6 from his two overs, providing a rare period of control for the visitors.
Despite the defeat, there were encouraging individual performances for the Spartans to take from the match, not least Baig's composed batting innings and Kidd's two-wicket haul. Reducing the opposition's extras tally and converting dot-ball pressure into wickets will be key areas for improvement as the season progresses.
