Murphy's Defiant Half-Century in Vain as Balakrishnan Blitz Sinks Sonning 2nds

Sonning 2nd XI were undone by a breathtaking unbeaten 120 from Harikrishnan Balakrishnan as High Wycombe chased down 144 without losing a wicket in just 12.4 overs at King George's Field on Saturday.

Having won the toss and inserted Sonning, High Wycombe's decision was immediately vindicated by a devastating spell from Mantaka Muhtadi. The seamer ripped through the top order, finishing with remarkable figures of 6-21 from his 12 overs, five of which were maidens. Duncan Parr was the first to fall, caught by wicketkeeper Chris Russell for a duck, before captain Dan Anderson (4) and Raoul Harding (4) followed in quick succession. At 16 for 3, Sonning were already in deep trouble.

Jameel Ahamed, promoted to open, showed some resistance with 13 from 36 balls, adding 28 for the fourth wicket with Robert Jones. However, Muhtadi removed both in short order — Ahamed caught and Jones taken off his own bowling — and when Henry Cook was bowled first ball, Sonning had slumped to 52 for 6 with the innings in tatters.

Enter Max Murphy. Batting at number seven, Murphy played a quite superb innings that gave the home side something to bowl at. He found a willing partner in Ethan Towner, and together the pair added 66 for the ninth wicket in a stand that transformed the scorecard. Murphy was particularly strong through the covers, striking seven fours in his unbeaten 51 from 81 balls, while Towner contributed a brisk 20 from 24 deliveries with four boundaries before being run out with the total on 142.

Paul Towner had earlier provided Murphy with some useful support during a seventh-wicket stand of 20, though his dismissal via run out for 5 from 26 balls was a frustrating end to a patient knock. Sam Taylor added a quick 4 before being bowled by F A Witcher, who finished with 1-44 from eight overs. Jack Durrant lasted just three balls, caught by Russell off Vinod Gooneratne to end the innings at 143 all out in 38.3 overs. A total of 32 extras, including seven no-balls from Ram Sekar's wayward spell, at least padded the scoreboard.

Whatever optimism Murphy's innings had generated evaporated within minutes of the second innings beginning. Balakrishnan was simply sensational, launching an extraordinary assault on the Sonning attack. His unbeaten 120 came from just 46 balls, laced with 18 fours and seven sixes, as no bowler could find any answer. Dan Anderson's 1.4 overs cost 32, Ethan Towner conceded 34 from two overs, and even Murphy, the hero with the bat, went for 34 from three overs with the ball. Jack Durrant was the most economical of the regular bowlers, conceding 26 from four overs with one maiden, while Sam Taylor's single over cost just four runs.

Russell played the ideal supporting role at the other end, accumulating 23 not out from 33 balls with three fours as the opening pair made light work of the target. High Wycombe reached 146 without loss, completing a comprehensive ten-wicket victory that inflicted a painful defeat on Sonning in this Division 4B encounter.
