Sonning Sunday 1s Fall Short as O'Loughlin's 89 Anchors Crowthorne to Comfortable Victory

Sonning Sunday 1s travelled to St Sebastian's Playing Field for a friendly fixture against Crowthorne & Crown Wood on 29 June, but were unable to contain the hosts' batting firepower before falling well short in the chase, losing by 95 runs.

Crowthorne captain Jules O'Loughlin won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that proved emphatic as he proceeded to dominate the Sonning bowling attack with a commanding 89 from 98 balls, striking 11 fours in an innings that formed the backbone of the home side's total. O'Loughlin was involved in virtually every meaningful partnership, putting on 57 for the first wicket with Joe Davies (18), 45 for the third wicket alongside Amit Puri (35), 54 for the fifth wicket with Krunal Patel (20), and a brisk 46 for the sixth wicket with Gerhard Krüger (24). His dismissal at 234-7, bowled by Asad Imam, came far too late for Sonning to stem the tide.

Asad Imam was Sonning's most effective bowler, returning impressive figures of 3-38 from his eight overs with a maiden, accounting for O'Loughlin, David Krüger, and Christopher Emes. Robert Jones chipped in with 2-46 from eight overs, while Isaac Jenner was economical early on with 1-37 from eight overs including a maiden. Dhruv Peshkar (1-21 from four overs) and captain Richard Skeil (1-7 from one over) also claimed scalps as Sonning managed to take eight wickets, but the damage had been done. Crowthorne posted a formidable 254-8 from their 40 overs, with 25 extras — including 15 wides — adding to Sonning's frustrations.

The reply got off to the worst possible start when Skeil was bowled by Jay Blaney for a first-ball duck, leaving Sonning immediately on the back foot at 0-1. It fell to wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar, promoted to open the batting, to rescue the innings, and he responded with a superb half-century — the standout Sonning performance of the day.

Peshkar and Robert Jones steadied matters with a vital 59-run second-wicket partnership, Jones contributing a composed 28 from 40 balls before being bowled by Blaney. The situation deteriorated rapidly when Henry Cook was caught off David Krüger for a first-ball nought, making it 62-3, and William Travers was stumped by Gerhard Krüger off James Carson's bowling for 6, leaving Sonning 74-4 and the required rate climbing steeply.

Peshkar found brief allies in Asad Imam (16 off 16 balls, including a six) and Philemon Pon (16 off 21 balls), adding 22 and 35 for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively. But when Peshkar was finally caught off Sourabh Sachdeva for a well-made 50 from 65 deliveries with five fours, the writing was on the wall at 131-6. Two quick wickets followed — Bharat Rathod was run out without facing a ball and Pon fell in the same over — and the innings subsided from there.

James Travers (9) and Qasim Anwar (10) showed some resistance in a 18-run ninth-wicket stand, but Joe Davies wrapped up the tail efficiently, taking 2-1 from two overs including a maiden to finish proceedings. Sonning were bowled out for 159 in 36 overs, with the hosts sharing the wickets around — Blaney (2-40), Carson (2-25), Sachdeva (2-21), and Davies (2-1) all contributing. Despite Peshkar's battling fifty and Imam's three-wicket haul, the target of 255 ultimately proved well beyond Sonning's reach on the day.
