Green and Jyothis Lay Foundations as Sonning Cruise to Dominant Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI delivered a commanding performance at King George's Field on Sunday, posting a mammoth 219 for 1 before restricting Maidenhead & Bray to 163 for 7 to claim a comprehensive 56-run victory in their Division 3 A encounter.

After Maidenhead & Bray captain Michelle Jeyarajah won the toss and opted to field, Sonning openers Rita Green and Geethika Jyothis made the visitors pay dearly. The pair put on a stunning 209-run opening partnership that utterly dominated the first innings, taking the attack to all eight bowlers used by the opposition. Green was the more aggressive of the two, smashing 13 fours in a magnificent 88 from just 69 balls before finally falling caught by Izzy Ratcliffe off the bowling of Tilly Lawrence. It was the only wicket Maidenhead & Bray managed to claim in the entire innings.

Jyothis was equally impressive at the other end, carrying her bat for an unbeaten 75 from 86 deliveries, an innings studded with nine boundaries. The pair's ruthless accumulation left the Maidenhead & Bray attack with nowhere to hide, and the visitors' bowling figures told a painful story — 55 extras conceded, including 44 wides, as discipline deserted them under relentless pressure. Alex Mistry's four overs cost 42 runs, while Lawrence was the sole bowler to take a wicket, finishing with 1 for 37 from her four overs.

Sophie Parker saw out the final five balls unbeaten on 1 as Sonning closed on an imposing 219 for 1, a total that always looked well beyond Maidenhead & Bray's reach.

The chase began promisingly enough for the visitors, with Aleeza Mehmood and Tilly Lawrence putting on 33 for the first wicket. However, sharp fielding from Jyothis accounted for Mehmood, run out for 8, and the momentum shifted. Michaela Herrett then trapped captain Jeyarajah lbw for 4 to leave Maidenhead & Bray 42 for 2.

Riya Srinivas offered the strongest resistance with a battling 28, adding 60 for the third wicket alongside Amy Woolland. But just as the partnership threatened to bring Maidenhead & Bray back into contention, skipper Katie Barrows entered the attack with devastating effect. Barrows produced a quite remarkable spell, taking 4 wickets for just 4 runs from a single over, bowling Srinivas and Woolland before having Isabella Pizer caught by Kira Knight. Izzy Ratcliffe (11 not out) and Swara Kalalbandi (2 not out) steadied things in the closing overs, but the target was always far beyond them. Geethika Jyothis complemented her batting display with tidy figures of 0 for 10 from three overs, conceding no extras — comfortably the most economical spell of the match. Maidenhead & Bray's innings was also blighted by extras, with 75 in total swelling their score but never threatening to bridge the gap. Sonning collected a full 20 league points from a thoroughly professional display.
