Sonning Women Demolish High Wycombe with Dominant All-Round Display

Sonning Women's 1st XI produced a commanding performance at Marlow Cricket Club on Sunday, amassing 228 for 3 before bowling High Wycombe out for 99 to secure a comprehensive victory in Division 3 A of the Home Counties Women's Cricket League.

Asked to bat first after High Wycombe captain Anna Cooper won the toss and opted to field, Sonning's openers Sophie Smith and Geethika Jyothis set about punishing a wayward bowling attack from the outset. The pair put on 78 for the first wicket, with Jyothis the more aggressive of the two, striking eight boundaries in a blistering 43 from just 27 deliveries before being caught by Cooper off the bowling of Anjika Goyal.

Smith continued to anchor the innings with composure, finding an excellent partner in Sophie Parker for a second-wicket stand of 87. Smith eventually fell for a superb 66 off 59 balls, including seven fours, caught by Sophia Sketchley off her own bowling. Parker, unbeaten throughout the rest of the innings, contributed a fluent 41 not out from 45 balls, while Chloe Bailey added a brisk 20 before being bowled by Mya Carberry-Rogers. Captain Grace Phillips chipped in with an unbeaten 10 as Sonning plundered runs at will. High Wycombe's bowling discipline deserted them badly, with 48 extras conceded — including 23 wides and 12 no-balls — gifting Sonning nearly a quarter of their total.

The hosts' reply never gained any momentum thanks to a devastating opening spell from Jyothis, who returned remarkable figures of 3 for 3 from 4.5 overs with two maidens. She struck with the very first wicket of the innings, having Cooper caught — the home captain departing for a duck — before bowling Maya Ali for nought to leave High Wycombe reeling at 0 for 2.

Michaela Herrett joined the early onslaught, taking a catch off her own bowling to dismiss Carberry-Rogers for 1, and High Wycombe slumped to 2 for 3. A run out of Sophia Sketchley, effected by Parker, made it 12 for 4, and the contest was effectively over as a competition.

Anjika Goyal (19) and Layla Ali (25) offered the only meaningful resistance for the home side. Their fifth-wicket partnership of 29 briefly steadied the ship, and Ali continued to fight, putting on another 29 for the eighth wicket. Elizabeth Van Deventer broke the Goyal-Ali stand, taking a fine caught-and-bowled before trapping Jo Sketchley lbw in the same over for a double strike. Katie Barrows bowled Pauline Hill for a first-ball duck, and Sophie Smith chipped in with the wicket of Sanya Hussain to keep the pressure relentless.

The last-wicket pair of Helen Boschen (4 not out from 37 balls) and Gilly Bradbury (2 from 30) added 25 in a stubborn stand that delayed the inevitable, but Jyothis returned to bowl Bradbury and wrap up the innings. High Wycombe were dismissed for 99 in 24.5 overs, with extras contributing 42 of that total. Sonning used ten bowlers in a match that showcased their remarkable depth, with Jyothis the outstanding performer on the day after her combined match figures of 43 runs with the bat and 3 for 3 with the ball.
