Match Report

Green's Magnificent Half-Century Not Enough as Sonning Fall Four Runs Short

Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered a heartbreaking four-run defeat to Binfield at King George's Field in Division 3 A, despite a superb 55 from opener Rita Green that looked to have set the hosts on course for victory.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Sonning made early inroads into the Binfield batting. Michaela Herrett struck with just two runs on the board, bowling Katy Slaughter for a duck to give the hosts the ideal start. Geethika Jyothis then removed Alison Wade for 4, and Grace Phillips cleaned up Elizabeth Ullstein for just 1, leaving Binfield wobbling at 38 for 3. Kira Knight added to the visitors' troubles when she trapped Rajbir Noble lbw for 12, and at 56 for 4, Sonning appeared firmly in control.

However, Binfield captain Jessica Jackson proved an immovable force at the top of the order. Batting through the entire 25 overs, Jackson compiled an unbeaten 64 from 69 balls, striking nine boundaries in an innings of real authority. She found a willing ally in Jackie Rawes, who contributed an unbroken 18 from 47 balls as the pair added 67 for the fifth wicket without being separated. Their partnership transformed the innings and carried Binfield to a competitive 123 for 4.

Sonning used seven bowlers in their quest for wickets, with Herrett returning the most economical figures of 1 for 12 from her five overs, including a maiden. Knight's 1 for 12 from three overs was also tidy, while Phillips and Jyothis each claimed a scalp. The 24 extras conceded, including 16 wides, proved costly in the final reckoning.

The chase began promisingly as Green and Sophie Parker put on 20 for the first wicket before Parker was bowled by Manisha Naik for 2. The pivotal partnership of the innings then unfolded as Green and Elinor Longridge added 50 for the second wicket, with Green moving fluently to her half-century. Green struck eight fours in a commanding knock of 55 from 52 balls, dominating the scoring while Longridge anchored the other end with a patient 10 from 32 deliveries.

The match turned dramatically once that partnership was broken. Helen Turner removed Longridge lbw and then bowled Jyothis for a duck in quick succession, and when Green herself fell bowled by Lucy Jeffery at 79 for 4, the complexion of the game shifted entirely. Kira Knight departed for just 1 in the following over, and suddenly Sonning had slumped from 70 for 1 to 80 for 5.

The lower order battled gamely to keep Sonning in the hunt. Michaela Herrett made 4 before being caught by Rawes off Katy Slaughter, and Grace Phillips contributed 5 before being run out. Belle Myers fell lbw to Slaughter for 3, leaving Sonning 108 for 8. Sarah Wonham and Chloe Bailey showed commendable resilience, remaining unbeaten on 2 and 6 respectively, but with captain Katie Barrows unable to bat, the innings closed on 119 for 8 — agonisingly four runs short of the target. Despite 31 extras in their favour, including 24 wides from the Binfield attack, Sonning could not quite get over the line in a match that ultimately hinged on the collapse of six wickets for just 49 runs after Green's dismissal.
