Kaleem Leads From Both Ends as Sonning Thirds Edge Home

Mark Lilley's decision to field first at Sonning was vindicated inside the opening hour, and by the close of a tense afternoon the home side had squeezed past Wargrave by three wickets in a low-scoring Division 9A contest that swung one way and then the other.

Mehar Ali Kaleem set the tone with the ball, working through eight tidy overs for three wickets at barely two an over and giving the visitors nothing to work with. Shahid Imtiaz matched him for wickets, his eight overs including two maidens, while Michael Longridge was almost impossible to get away, conceding just nine runs from five overs with a pair of maidens of his own. Wargrave's captain Mayank Gudimetla top scored with 17 and Andy Meader made 14, but no partnership was allowed to settle.

Shamitha Widanapathirana chipped in with two wickets as the innings began to unravel, and Lilley himself finished things off, taking the last wicket to close Wargrave out for 96. A total of 25 extras was the visitors' second-highest contributor, an indication of how rarely the bat got the better of the ball on the surface.

Chasing 97 should have been a straightforward afternoon's work, but Joseph Neall had other ideas. Bowling with control and asking questions of every batter, he removed Wazir Khan, Charles Astwood and Widanapathirana in short order as Sonning slipped from 2 for none to 24 for four, Max Meader adding to the pressure from the other end. Neall's eventual figures of five for 13 from seven overs were the best of the match by some distance.

Mohamad Shahbaz provided the first real resistance, batting with clear intent for 21 from 30 balls, and Alexander Fleming, William Hibberdine and Longridge all spent time at the crease as Sonning tried to rebuild. When the seventh wicket fell at 47, however, the game was very much alive and Wargrave were the side with their tails up.

What followed settled it. Kaleem, unbeaten on 30 from 34 balls with four fours and a six, took responsibility and looked to score whenever the opportunity arose, while Lilley provided the anchor at the other end, occupying the crease for 39 balls in a watchful 18 not out. The pair added the 50 runs required without being separated, guiding the home side to 97 for seven and a win with wickets and plenty of time in hand.

It was a victory built on discipline first and nerve second: five bowlers used, only 96 conceded, and then an unbroken eighth-wicket stand that turned a precarious position into a comfortable finish. Neall's five-wicket haul deserved better company, and Wargrave will feel they had their chances, but Sonning found the two innings that mattered when it mattered most.
