Terry's Defiant Half-Century Not Enough as Sharks Fall Short Against Purley
Sonning U15 Sharks suffered a defeat at Knowl Hill on Wednesday evening as Purley on Thames posted an imposing 189 for 8 before restricting the home side to 129 for 9 in reply in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture.
Captain Ollie Terry won the toss and opted to field first, but the decision did not yield the early control the Sharks would have hoped for. Purley opener Jamie Hill set the tone with an aggressive 33 from just 24 balls, striking seven fours before retiring not out. Although Aaron Francis fell early for 9, caught by Edward Jones off the bowling of Henry Robson, Hill and captain Adhrit Ghargi added 25 for the second wicket before Ghargi was caught behind by Terry off the bowling of Jones for 13.
The pivotal passage of the first innings came in the form of an 82-run third-wicket partnership between Ben Alexander and Stanley Clarke. Alexander contributed 16 from 20 balls before being bowled by Shreyas Koppole, while Clarke went on to make 28 from 25 deliveries before falling to Benjamin Peters, caught once again by Terry. The Sharks skipper was outstanding in the field, taking three catches and effecting a run out to account for four dismissals in total.
Extras proved a significant factor in the Purley total, with 66 runs coming without the bat needing to make contact — 50 of those in wides alone. The Sharks' bowlers struggled for consistency, with every member of the ten-man attack conceding wides. Peters was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 21 from his two overs, while Koppole, Robson, Jones, Praneel Bhatt, and Mikhail Jafri each claimed one wicket apiece to give the bowling card a more respectable look.
Chasing 190, the Sharks made a solid start through openers Kanishka Suriarachchi and Toby Whitehead, who put on 28 for the first wicket. Suriarachchi looked in fine touch, hitting five fours in his 22 from 27 balls, and extended his stay to add a further 23 with Koppole for the second wicket before being caught off Jonah Dunford's bowling with the score on 57.
The middle order then crumbled around Terry. Henry Robson cracked a quick-fire 4 from 2 balls but was bowled by Avishkar Singh, who finished with excellent figures of 2 for 12 from three overs. Edward Jones departed for just 1, caught by Ghargi off Alex Rawlison, and the Sharks slipped from 57 for 4 to 89 for 7 as Purley captain Ghargi produced a devastating spell of 2 for 7 from two overs, including a maiden, dismissing Nathan Salisbury and Jafri in quick succession.
Terry, batting at number five, produced a captain's innings of real quality. His unbeaten 48 from 40 balls featured seven fours and a six, and he single-handedly kept the chase alive, dragging the score from 57 for 4 to the final total of 129. However, with wickets falling at the other end — Sambuddha Bhattacharjee and Praneel Bhatt both departing without scoring — the required rate spiralled beyond reach.
Despite the defeat, Terry's all-round contribution with bat, gloves, and in the field stood out as a significant individual performance, while the bowling efforts of Peters and Koppole offered encouragement. The Sharks will know, however, that the 66 extras conceded in the first innings ultimately proved the difference in this contest.
