Match Report
Stingers Cruise to Comfortable Victory as Howson Stars with Bat and Ball
Sonning Stingers Soft Ball produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Emmbrook & Bearwood by 56 runs in their WSB Division 1 fixture at King George's Field on Tuesday evening, with Frances Howson leading the way with a superb individual performance across both innings.
Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and elected to bat first, but found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Stingers bowling attack that shared the wickets around impressively. Captain Sharon Fleming set the tone with her economical spell of 2-0-5-1, while Grace Phillips was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 wickets for 15 runs from her three overs, including a maiden. Frances Howson also chipped in with 2 for 17 from three overs, and contributions from Katie Barrows (1-13), Rebecca Malhi (1-8) and Rita Green (1-9) ensured all seven Stingers bowlers made an impact.
Deepa Ravi provided the main resistance for the visitors, striking an enterprising 16 from 13 balls that included two fours and a six — the only maximum of the match. Katherine Brickley added 10 and Lindsay Brown contributed 7, but with eight wickets falling across the innings and 33 extras making up a significant portion of the total, Emmbrook & Bearwood were restricted to 77 all told from their 16 overs.
The Stingers' reply was emphatic, built on a magnificent innings from opener Frances Howson. She struck 29 from just 16 deliveries, peppering the boundary with five fours in an innings that immediately seized the initiative and put the chase firmly on track. Howson's all-round contribution — two wickets and a maiden with the ball followed by the top score with the bat — was the outstanding individual display of the evening.
Rita Green maintained the momentum in fine style, blasting 17 from only 9 balls with three boundaries, while Sophie Parker delivered a crucial lower-order knock of 15 from 11 deliveries, also finding the rope three times. Captain Sharon Fleming anchored proceedings with a steady 10 from 17 balls as the Stingers kept the scoreboard ticking throughout.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's bowling struggled to contain the hosts, with extras proving particularly costly. A total of 42 extras — including 26 wides and 16 no-balls — effectively handed Sonning more than a third of their runs. Laura Rohan's three overs went for 31, while Tina Lucas conceded 12 from a single over that included 10 wides. Katherine Brickley, Lindsay Brown and Anna Alborough each claimed a wicket, but the damage had long been done.
The Stingers reached 133 for 3 from their 16 overs, securing a comprehensive victory and the full 10 league points. It was a thoroughly professional performance from Sharon Fleming's side, with every member of the squad contributing either with bat or ball in a match where the collective effort proved far too strong for the visitors.
