U9 Eagles Claim Victory at Home with Disciplined Bowling Display
Sonning U9 Eagles secured a well-earned win against Reading Under 9 Leopards in this BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture at King George's Field on 10th May 2026. After Reading won the toss and opted to field, the Eagles posted 137 from their 20 overs before restricting the visitors to 129, winning the contest by eight runs.
Batting first, Sonning's total of 137 was built on a foundation of extras, with 113 coming in sundries as Reading's bowlers struggled with their accuracy. Guhan Raja's two overs proved the most expensive, conceding 23 runs including 10 wides and 12 no-balls, while Humaid Siddiqui and Tharush Desh were similarly wayward. Among the Sonning batters, Abdul-Ahad Baig top-scored with 7 off 15 balls, including a boundary, while Aadvik Gonchikar struck a brisk 6 from just 9 deliveries, also finding the rope once. Maurya Chirunamala contributed a useful 4 off 10 balls lower down the order, and Aryan Chennamaneni occupied the crease impressively, facing 27 balls for his 3 runs to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Reading's reply started poorly as openers Srivas Kommana and Van Niekerk Willem were both dismissed twice apiece without scoring, their 12 balls each yielding nothing off the bat. The early wickets put immediate pressure on the visitors and they were unable to build any meaningful momentum at the top of the order.
Captain Ahmad Naqash was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, claiming three wickets from his two overs. Though he conceded 21 runs, his breakthroughs at crucial moments kept Reading on the back foot. Maurya Chirunamala delivered an excellent opening spell, taking 2 wickets for just 4 runs from his two overs — comfortably the most economical figures of the match on either side.
Asheer Choudrie also impressed, bowling a maiden in his two-over spell while picking up two wickets for 9 runs. His control was notable in a match where extras dominated on both sides, and he demonstrated real accuracy for a player at this age group. Abdul-Ahad Baig completed the Eagles' wicket-taking efforts, chipping in with 1 for 8 from his two overs.
For Reading, Humaid Siddiqui offered the most resistance with the bat, scoring 5 runs including a four from his 11 balls. Captain Cyril Voltaire matched that tally with 5 off 15 deliveries, while Hriyaan Desh also contributed 5 runs, hitting the only other boundary in the Reading innings. Abbas Ali Khan added 3 as the visitors finished on 129 for 11 wickets, ultimately falling short despite accumulating 109 extras of their own.
The Eagles' bowling attack proved the decisive difference between the two sides. While both teams struggled with discipline — Sonning conceding 74 no-balls and 27 wides in the field — the home side's ability to take 11 wickets, each carrying a five-run penalty under the competition's pairs format, ultimately tipped the balance in their favour. It was a complete team effort under the captaincy of Ahmad Naqash, with every member of the squad contributing either with bat or ball.
