Sonning 2nd XI Undone by Commanding Holmer Green Opening Stand

Sonning 2nd XI suffered a comprehensive nine-wicket defeat at King George's Field as Holmer Green CC chased down a modest target of 139 with ease in their Division 4B encounter on 1st August.

Having won the toss and inserted Sonning, Holmer Green's decision to bowl first was vindicated as they kept a tight rein on the home side's batting throughout the innings. Openers Duncan Parr and Gaurav Jayan provided a solid foundation with a partnership of 46 for the first wicket, Parr looking the more fluent of the two as he struck five boundaries in his 28 from 45 balls. However, once Cara Duggan trapped Parr lbw, the floodgates began to open.

Sonning's middle order crumbled under sustained pressure from Harry Stephens and Phil Pocock. Stephens, who bowled an impressive 11-over spell, returned figures of 4-38 with four maidens, proving virtually unplayable at times. He bowled Jameel Ahamed for 8, had captain Raoul Harding caught by Kevin King for 11, dismissed Edward McLoughlin for a first-ball duck, and later removed Ghulam Abbas, caught by Scott Norwood for 1. Pocock complemented Stephens superbly, claiming the wickets of Jayan and Robert Jones, both lbw, to finish with 2-19 from his six overs.

From 89-4, Sonning slumped to 89-6 as Harding's brief cameo of 11, which included a six and a four, was ended by Stephens, who then cleaned up McLoughlin with the very next delivery. The home side were in dire straits and in desperate need of a rescue act.

Max Murphy provided the only real resistance of the innings, batting with determination and flair at number five. His 43 from 62 balls was the top score, featuring nine boundaries as he carried his bat deep into the innings. Murphy added a useful 21 for the seventh wicket with wicketkeeper Kavya Panchal, who contributed 7 before being run out by King. Murphy continued to fight, but when Sam Richmond had him caught by Andrew Richmond with the score on 138, the innings was over in 35.3 overs.

The Holmer Green reply was utterly dominant. Zebby Mahmood and Stephens, fresh from his bowling heroics, put on a commanding opening stand of 110, taking the game away from Sonning with aggressive, confident stroke play. Mahmood was the more explosive, smashing 61 from just 68 balls with eleven fours and a six, before Jack Durrant bowled him to claim Sonning's sole wicket. Ghulam Abbas deserved credit for his economical spell of 8-4-26-0, but he lacked support from the other end as the visitors helped themselves throughout.

Stephens remained unbeaten on 55 from 85 deliveries, an innings laced with seven fours and two sixes, while Scott Norwood struck a brisk unbeaten 11 from 10 balls as Holmer Green reached their target in just 27.1 overs with nine wickets in hand. Captain Raoul Harding used seven bowlers in search of breakthroughs, but the damage had already been done with the bat. It was a chastening afternoon for Sonning, who collected just three points from the fixture while Holmer Green took the full 26 on offer.
