Match Report
Falcons Soar to Victory as Rawat and Williams Star at Ali's Pond
Sonning U9 Falcons secured a commanding victory over Holyport Under 9 Eagles in the U9 Super 8s North East league fixture at Reading Blue Coat School's Ali's Pond Pitch on 6th August 2023. Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that proved decisive as the Falcons posted 113 from their 20 overs before restricting the visitors to just 73 in reply.
Aryaansh Rawat was the standout performer with the bat, striking an unbeaten 15 from just 11 deliveries, including an impressive six and a four — the only maximum of the entire match. His aggressive innings provided the Falcons with crucial momentum during the middle overs. Heet Panchal also contributed handsomely with 11 runs from 11 balls, finding the boundary once, while Jude Alden chipped in with a useful 9 off 10 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Extras played a significant role in the Falcons' total, with 61 additional runs coming from the Holyport bowling attack. The visitors' bowlers struggled with their lines, conceding 23 wides and 26 no-balls across the innings. Jack O'Sullivan was the pick of the Holyport attack, claiming five wickets from his three overs and bowling a maiden, though he was expensive with nine wides. Zachary Hinkel supported well with two wickets for seven runs from his two overs.
The Falcons' bowling effort was a true team performance, with nine bowlers sharing the workload. Oscar Williams produced a devastating spell, taking four wickets for just three runs from his two overs — a remarkable return that left the Holyport batting in disarray. His accuracy was outstanding, conceding no wides or no-balls, making him comfortably the most economical bowler on either side.
Eleanor Hatchett-Walker delivered an excellent two-over spell of her own, claiming two wickets for five runs and bowling a maiden over. Aryaansh Rawat continued his fine all-round display with a miserly three overs that yielded one wicket for just five runs, including a maiden. Heet Panchal was equally disciplined, conceding only three runs from his two overs while taking a wicket and bowling a maiden of his own.
Holyport's reply never gained any real traction. Their batsmen managed only 28 runs from the bat, with extras contributing 45 of their 73-run total. Jack O'Sullivan top-scored with six runs from 13 balls, while Ethan Price also made six from 11 deliveries. George Baker endured a particularly difficult afternoon, dismissed three times during his innings of just two runs, and Ben Wallace was similarly troubled, also being dismissed three times without scoring.
The 40-run margin of victory underlined the Falcons' dominance across both disciplines. With contributions throughout the batting order and a disciplined collective bowling display, Sonning demonstrated the well-rounded qualities that make them a formidable outfit in the Berkshire Youth Cricket League.
