Match Report
Sabres Chase Down 95 with Comfort as Green and Setia Star at Twyford
Sonning U11 Sabres recorded a convincing victory away at Twyford and Ruscombe Cricket Club on Thursday evening, chasing down 95 with 14 runs to spare in their BYCL Under 11 Challenge fixture. Captain Alexander Green won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that was fully vindicated as the Sabres' bowlers restricted the home side before their batters made light work of the target.
Twyford's innings got off to a promising start through opener Joe V, who top-scored with 21 from 27 balls to provide a platform. Contributions came from across the home batting order, with Harrison Kidd adding 11, George Et and Harry B both making 8, and Ayush R chipping in with a brisk 7 from just 7 deliveries. However, no Twyford batter was able to convert a start into a truly commanding score, and regular wickets kept the home side in check.
The pick of the Sonning bowlers were Seve Horton and Isabella Partridge, who claimed two wickets apiece. Horton's figures of 2-16 from three overs were particularly impressive, while Partridge returned excellent figures of 2-9 from her two overs, proving difficult to score against. Ranbir Setia was the most economical of the Sabres' attack, conceding just 6 runs from his two overs and building pressure from one end.
Twyford posted 94 for 6 from their 16 overs, a total bolstered by 29 extras — including 14 no-balls, 12 of which came from Niko Jordinson's two costly overs. That additional generosity with the ball gave the home side a total that looked competitive on paper but would ultimately prove insufficient.
The Sabres' reply was built on confident batting throughout the order. Alexander Hatchett-Walker struck 12 from 11 balls at the top before being dismissed, but captain Green anchored the early stages with an assured 18 from 13 deliveries, batting with fluency and intent. Zain Baloch continued the momentum with 16 from 12 balls in an innings that kept the scoreboard ticking over at pace.
The lower order proved equally valuable, with Yutika Reddy Akula contributing a steady 12 from 16 balls and Ranbir Setia matching Green's tally of 18, also from 16 deliveries, to ensure the Sabres sailed past the target. Setia's all-round performance — 6 runs conceded with the ball and 18 with the bat — was one of the standout individual displays of the evening.
Twyford's bowlers toiled hard, with Matyas Sheppard the pick of the attack, delivering a maiden in his spell of 2-0-3-0. Arthur Et also impressed with 1-12 from two overs. However, with extras totalling 21 in the Sonning innings — including 13 wides — the home side gave away too many freebies to mount sustained pressure on the visitors.
Sonning reached 108 for 5 from their 16 overs to secure the victory and collect 20 league points, a result built on disciplined bowling, particularly from Horton, Partridge, and Setia, followed by consistent contributions across the batting lineup.
