Match Report
Lott and Suriarachchi Power U15 Sharks to Comfortable Victory at Brownsfield
Sonning U15 Sharks produced a commanding batting display to chase down Thatcham Town's total of 116 with nearly four overs to spare, securing a convincing win in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge at Brownsfield on 1 July.
Thatcham captain Shay Palmer won the toss and elected to bat, but his side found themselves in immediate difficulty against the pace of Veer Krishna. The opening bowler was devastating in his two-over spell, claiming three wickets for just 11 runs. Palmer was caught by Neel Kumar for 1, Alfie Smith followed for the same score, and though Freddie Bartholomew counter-attacked with a brisk 16 off eight balls — including two fours and a six — he too fell to Krishna, leaving Thatcham reeling at 27 for 3.
Lewis Jackson steadied the innings with the top score of 20 from 18 balls, finding the boundary three times during a useful 23-run stand for the fifth wicket with Jake Lobb. However, Parthasarathy Palaniappan broke through twice in his two overs, bowling both Jackson and Lobb to return excellent figures of 2-6. Neel Kumar was equally miserly, conceding just six runs from his two overs while dismissing Alex Giddings.
Aiden Hunter provided the backbone of the Thatcham innings, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 15 from 32 balls. He anchored a partnership of 31 with Luca Oelofse for the eighth wicket that gave the total some respectability. Charlie Price contributed a handy 9 off six balls before being stumped by Harrison Lott off Benjamin Peters. Timothy Jenner rounded off the bowling attack by clean bowling Tobias Liew for a duck as Thatcham closed on 116 for 9, a total inflated by 43 extras — including 24 wides — that the Sharks will want to address.
The chase was dominated from the very first ball by the opening pair of captain Harrison Lott and Kanishka Suriarachchi. The duo put on a magnificent 78-run opening partnership that effectively settled the contest before either was dismissed. Both batsmen scored an identical 32 runs, Lott striking six fours from 27 deliveries while Suriarachchi found the boundary five times in his 29-ball knock. Both retired not out, generously giving their teammates an opportunity at the crease.
Kishan Akula continued the momentum at number three, contributing a fluent unbeaten 17 from 19 balls with four boundaries. Timothy Jenner (5) and Darshil Saxena (5) both fell caught by Shay Palmer, but these were mere hiccups in what was a thoroughly dominant run chase. Neel Kumar added an unbeaten 8, crashing two fours as the Sharks reached their target of 118 for 2 in just 16.2 overs.
The Sharks used ten bowlers across the Thatcham innings, with Krishna's three-wicket haul the standout performance. Parthasarathy Palaniappan's economical 2-6 from two overs was equally impressive, while Kanishka Suriarachchi bowled two tidy overs of spin, conceding only four runs. The comprehensive nature of this victory, chasing down the target with 22 balls remaining and only two wickets lost, underlined the depth of talent within this Sonning U15 Sharks squad.
