Sophie Smith's Magnificent 91 Not Enough as Sonning Tie with Wokingham in Dramatic League Encounter

Sonning Women's 1st XI were left to rue a dramatic finish at Wellington Oval as their Division 3 A clash with Wokingham ended in a tie, both sides finishing on 157 for 5 from their 25 overs in a match that swung back and forth throughout.

After Wokingham captain Rashmi Singh won the toss and inserted Sonning, the visitors suffered an early setback when Rita Green was run out for a diamond duck without facing a ball, with wicketkeeper Leanne Freeth effecting the dismissal to leave Sonning 4 for 1. What followed, however, was a batting masterclass from Sophie Smith, who took control of the innings with authoritative strokeplay that kept the scoreboard ticking throughout.

Sophie Parker contributed 7 from 21 balls in a partnership of 22 for the second wicket before falling bowled to Samantha Mills, but it was Smith who anchored the innings superbly. She put on 32 with Elinor Longridge for the third wicket and then found an willing ally in Elizabeth Van Deventer, who struck a brisk 20 from just 15 deliveries including three fours in a stand of 39 for the fourth wicket. Van Deventer's entertaining cameo ended when she was caught by Freeth off Mills, who finished with figures of 2 for 36 from her five overs.

Smith continued to dominate, peppering the boundary with 14 fours in an unbeaten 91 from 83 balls — a knock that carried the Sonning innings almost single-handedly. The lower order struggled around her, with Geethika Jyothis run out for 2 and Hannah Brooks managing just 1 not out from 17 balls, but generous extras from Wokingham's bowlers, totalling 30 including 24 wides, helped Sonning post 157 for 5.

Wokingham's reply got off to the worst possible start when Belle Myers struck with the second ball of the innings, trapping Pari Kulkarni lbw for nought. Myers was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 20 from her five overs. She added Chandrika Sharma, bowled for 11, after a second-wicket partnership of 26 with Michaela Evans had steadied the home side.

Evans and Iris Pritchard then rebuilt with a crucial stand of 52 for the third wicket, taking Wokingham from 26 for 2 to 78 for 3. Evans struck four fours in her 27 before Smith, continuing her outstanding all-round display, bowled her to break the partnership. Smith then removed Pritchard for 24 to claim 2 for 19 from five tidy overs, leaving Wokingham 88 for 4 and seemingly under pressure.

Hannah Murphy, however, proved the linchpin of the chase. The unbeaten Murphy anchored a vital fifth-wicket partnership of 54 with Freeth, who struck an aggressive 18 from 15 balls before Myers bowled her to claim her third wicket. With 15 still needed, Theresa Power joined Murphy and the pair guided Wokingham to the target — or so it appeared. Power hit a crisp 13 not out from 12 deliveries, but in the end the scores finished level at 157, denying both sides outright victory. Murphy finished unbeaten on 31 from 39 balls, her four fours helping ensure Wokingham at least avoided defeat, while Sonning were left to reflect on what might have been had they managed to convert Smith's heroics into a winning total.
