Sabres Edge Past Slough in Tight BYCL Encounter at Blue Coat
Sonning U11 Sabres secured a hard-fought victory over Slough U11 Pumas in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) East at Reading Blue Coat School on 10th May, defending successfully after captain Lewis Towner won the toss and opted to field first.
Slough posted 131 from their 20 overs, a total bolstered significantly by 57 extras — 51 of which came from wides — as the Sabres' bowling attack struggled at times with its line and length. Of the Slough batters, Leesha Gulati top-scored with 14 off 14 balls, striking two boundaries, while Vaishnavi Vatnala contributed a brisk 11 from just nine deliveries, also finding the rope twice. Riya Deo added a useful 12 off 12 balls lower down the order, and captain Khushangi Sharma chipped in with 9 off 15.
The standout bowling performance for the Sabres came from Kabir Nair Bansode, who returned outstanding figures of 3-7 from three overs, including a maiden — comfortably the most economical spell of the innings. Muhammad Ansari also made a significant impact, claiming 3-21 from his three overs, while Monish Karthik Saimpu and Arjun Baradvaj each picked up a wicket apiece to keep the pressure on. Viaan Choudermet bowled a tidy two overs for just seven runs without conceding a single wide, providing welcome control amid a combined total of 51 wides from the Sabres' attack.
In reply, Sonning reached 120 from their 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets, enough to claim the victory in the pairs format. Captain Towner led from the front with a composed knock of 18 off 12 balls, cracking three fours to set the tone at the top of the order. Jasper Hawkins provided solid support with 9 off 12 including a boundary, while Ishaan Acharya contributed a handy 8 from 13 deliveries in the middle order.
The Sabres' innings was not without its difficulties. Araiz Younis showed patience with 7 off 14 balls, finding one four, and Monish Karthik Saimpu added 6 off 8, but the home side lost wickets at regular intervals. Arjun Baradvaj was tied down for 3 off 17 balls, and the loss of eight wickets — with the associated five-run penalties — kept Slough firmly in the contest throughout.
Slough's bowlers competed admirably, with Riya Deo the pick of the attack. She claimed 3-10 from three overs in a remarkably accurate spell that yielded not a single wide — a rare feat in the match. Akira Kabilshaw supported well with 2-19 from three overs, and Zahrah Dhunna picked up a wicket, though she was less economical. Slough also struggled with their extras, conceding 56 — including 47 wides — which ultimately proved the difference between the two sides.
In a match where extras dominated the scorecards on both sides, it was the Sabres' superior wicket-taking ability in the field that proved decisive. Kabir Nair Bansode's miserly three-wicket haul and Towner's authoritative knock at the top were the key contributions as Sonning collected the full 20 league points from a contest that was closer than the final result might suggest.
