Falcons Struggle with the Ball as Wokingham Cruise to Comfortable Victory
Sonning U9 Falcons travelled to the McGill Oval on 16th July for a BYCL Under 9 Super 8s Central league fixture against Wokingham U9 Acorns, but found themselves on the wrong end of a comprehensive defeat after being unable to contain a powerful home batting display.
Captain Aadvik Gonchikar won the toss and elected to bat first, but the Falcons found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Wokingham bowling attack. The home side's bowlers were outstanding, with several delivering maiden overs in a pairs format — no mean feat at this age group. Viraaj Fogla was the pick of the Wokingham attack, returning remarkable figures of 2-1-1-3, including a maiden, while Benjamin Seager (2-1-1-1) and captain Mauryan Ramesh (2-1-1-0) were equally parsimonious. Harry Wagstaff bowled three overs with two maidens, conceding just nine runs and picking up two wickets.
Oliver Gomez top-scored for the Falcons with 10 runs from 16 balls, hitting two fours, though he was dismissed three times during his stay at the crease. Gonchikar and Yeshwin Saimpu each contributed nine runs, with Saimpu finding the boundary twice. Zachary Knight provided a late cameo of five runs from just five balls, including a four, but the Falcons could manage only 75 from their 20 overs, losing 12 wickets along the way. Extras accounted for 34 of the total, highlighting how much the batters struggled to score off the bat.
The Wokingham reply was emphatic. Benjamin Seager led the charge with a superb 31 from 14 balls, striking four fours and a six in an innings of genuine quality. Shauryanil Banerjee was equally destructive, smashing six fours in his unbeaten 25 from just 10 deliveries. Captain Mauryan Ramesh added 22 from 14 balls with three fours, while Dhruv Sharma (19 off 13), Viraaj Fogla (18 off 16), and Viraaj Dhanda (14 off 11) all made meaningful contributions. Every Wokingham batter got runs as the home side raced to 224 from their 20 overs.
The Falcons' bowling was a difficult watch for the travelling contingent. Extras contributed 66 runs to the Wokingham total, with 36 wides and 20 no-balls proving particularly costly. Oliver Gomez conceded nine wides in his two overs, while Zachary Knight sent down seven wides alongside two no-balls. Mihira Arisetty went for 34 from his two overs, and Ario Snarey conceded 27, with five of those coming as wides.
The one shining light with the ball for the Falcons was Ziko Ghosh Nag, who produced a spell of genuine class. His figures of 2-1-1-3 were exceptional — a maiden over, just a single run conceded, and three wickets claimed. It was comfortably the best bowling performance of the entire match from either side and a display the young left-armer can be extremely proud of. Zachary Knight and Mihira Arisetty also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Despite the heavy defeat, there were individual moments for the Falcons to take heart from. Ghosh Nag's bowling was outstanding, Gomez showed willingness to play his shots with the bat, and both Gonchikar and Saimpu demonstrated they can score at a good tempo. The challenge for the Falcons will be to find greater consistency across the squad, particularly in reducing the extras tally when bowling, if they are to compete with sides of Wokingham's calibre in this league.
